Latham and Linklaters take lead roles on first French 'dim sum' bond

Linklaters and Latham & Watkins have advised on the first renminbi-denominated bond by a French company, reports The Asian Lawyer. L'Air Liquide, a French producer of industrial and medical gases, has guaranteed the issue of two tranches of bonds, worth $400m (£256m), by its subsidiary, Air Liquide Finance. The bonds were listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 19 September.

US quartet lead on $1.6bn Asia tech deal

Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison, Goodwin Procter, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Debevoise & Plimpton have advised on a deal which has seen a consortium of investors offer $1.6bn (£1bn) for a stake in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, writes The Asian Lawyer. The consortium includes Silicon Valley private equity firm Silver Lake Technology Management, Moscow-based venture capital group Digital Sky Technologies (DST) Global, Singaporean sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings and Yunfeng Capital, an investment group led by Alibaba founder and chief executive officer Jack Ma. If the consortium's tender offer is fully subscribed, the consortium will acquire slightly less than 5% of the company, which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Ashurst will move to ramp up its lawyer headcount in Asia and shake up its partner remuneration over the next three years in the wake of its ambitious tie-up with leading Australian firm Blake Dawson. The City law firm, which agreed the union with Blakes last week (23 September), is planning to sharply increase joint lawyer numbers in Asia from around 155 lawyers at present.
