SRA set to offer fast-track qualification rights to Asia lawyers

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has approved new regulations for the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) that could see the scheme expanded to a host of new jurisdictions including China and Japan. The proposed changes, which will come into effect in September if approved by the Legal Services Board, are intended to better regulate internationally-qualified lawyers seeking admission in England and Wales.

The firm has hired Takuho Sha from Takeda, one of Japan's largest pharmaceutical companies and a key client for CMS. Sha spent 13 years as patent counsel for Takeda in Japan and Europe.

Stephenson Harwood has acted for Indonesia's largest airline, PT Lion Mentari, on the financing of seven new generation Boeing 737-900ER airliners worth $500m (£317m). The team at Stephenson Harwood was led by Singapore partner and global head of aviation Paul Ng, who joined the firm last year from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he was head of the Asia asset finance and aviation practice.

The outsourcers are coming

The news that Microsoft is sending out legal work to a team of lawyers at legal process outsourcing (LPO) provider CPA Global in India is the latest indication that one of the most talked-about trends in recent years is no flash in the pan. That the announcement followed the defection earlier this month of former Rio Tinto managing attorney Leah Cooper to a business development role at CPA only adds further credence to the growing acceptance of legal outsourcing - particularly since Cooper herself was the driving force behind an agreement struck between CPA and Rio last June that saw a team of CPA lawyers take on work such as document review and legal research for the mining giant.

Microsoft outsources legal work to India with CPA Global deal

Microsoft has entered into an agreement with legal outsourcing provider CPA Global to offshore legal work to lawyers in India. The technology giant began a pilot scheme with CPA in October and formally rolled it out at the end of 2009. A team of between three and five qualified lawyers at CPA are handling multi-jurisdictional legal support work, including legal research, for Microsoft. The lawyers are based in CPA's offices in Gurgaon, near Delhi.
