Shearman & Sterling has won a lead role on the acquisition of General Motors' Hummer brand by a Chinese industrial manufacturer. Shearman advised China's Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery (Tengzhong) on its purchase, in a deal reportedly worth up to $250m (£151m).

Freshfields acts on high-stakes India mobile deal

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has secured a major role on talks between Indian mobile phone provider Bharti Airtel and South Africa's MTN over a cross-shareholding deal that could lead to a full merger. Freshfields is advising MTN, with a team led by partners Bruce Embley, Pratap Amin and Simon Weller. Freshfields has handled a number of matters for MTN including the company's $5.53bn (£3.6bn) acquisition of Dubai-based Investcom in 2006.South African practice Webber Wentzel, which has offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London, is local counsel to MTN.

Latham and MoFo score leads on Hong Kong aluminium IPO

Latham & Watkins and Morrison & Foerster have taken leading roles on a high-profile Asian initial public offering (IPO) as a run of major deals hit the region. The two firms are advising on the Hong Kong float of aluminium maker China Zhongwang. Latham Hong Kong partner David Zhang led representation of China Zhonwang in its international float of shares valued at around $1.2bn (£800m). Morrison & Foerster represented the lead underwriters on the deal, CITIC Securities, JP Morgan, Macquarie Capital Securities and UBS with a team including partners Ven Tan, Paul Boltz, and Xiaohu Ma. It is the largest IPO in the region so far this year.

Barlows names new Hong Kong and China chief

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has appointed a new managing partner for Hong Kong and China. The top 50 UK firm has promoted litigation partner David Smyth to the role, replacing Camille Jojo, who has held the position since 1995. The news comes as Barlows undergoes a period of change in the region. The firm recently relocated London insurance partner John Hanson and aviation partner Mert Hifzi to Singapore.

Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has launched an Asian international arbitration and litigation practice with senior lawyers relocated from London to Hong Kong. The practice will be led by Paul Mitchard QC (pictured), a veteran arbitration specialist who has represented numerous multinational corporations in international commercial matters, particularly in the energy and financial services industries.Counsel Mark Mangan and associate Calvin Chan will also relocate from London to Hong Kong to join the international arbitration and litigation group. The firm has also recruited associate Alan Tsang for the group from the local arm of Pinsent Masons.

Ashurst boosts Singapore arm with partner move

Ashurst has bolstered its Singapore office with the relocation of a senior London corporate partner and the launch of a dispute resolution practice in the region. The top 10 City firm transferred Susan Roy to Singapore to lead the office's corporate practice earlier this month. Roy's relocation makes her the first head of corporate for Ashurst's 25-lawyer Singapore arm, which has previously been overseen by office managing partner Matthew Bubb. Roy - whose practice focuses on M&A, including private equity and equity capital raisings - is the fourth partner in the office.

CC, Simpson Thacher lead on $21bn China financing

Clifford Chance (CC) and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett have acted on a $21bn (£14bn) Chinese financing. The money was raised by the Aluminium Corporation of China (Chinalco) ahead of its expected $19.5bn (£13.1bn) investment in mining giant Rio Tinto.Simpson Thacher advised Chinalco, fielding a multi-office team led by Beijing-based corporate partner Douglas Markel, alongside UK finance partner Euan Gorrie in London, New York-based corporate partner Alan Klein and the firm's Washington DC managing partner Peter Thomas, who advised on regulatory aspects. Chinese firm Commerce & Finance also took a role for Chinalco.
