CIS leader Magisters set for London launch

Eastern European independent Magisters has opened a London office, with Moscow-based partner Andrew Mac appointed to oversee operations in the City on a part-time basis. The CIS-based firm's City base will be purely a representative office, intended to raise the firm's commitment to existing relationships and add quality of service to the European client base. More than two-thirds of Magisters' clients are US or European clients.Mac's practice focuses on M&A, commercial law, real estate, investment, securities, and privatisation.

Norton Rose, Freshfields lead on E9.3bn takeover

Norton Rose has advised German utility giant RWE on its E9.3bn (£8.4bn) takeover of Dutch rival Essent, the latest in a series of big-money mergers involving European utility companies. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised Essent as RWE, Germany's second-largest utility and the fifth-largest in Europe, paid around 9.6 times Essent's estimated pre-tax annual earnings to complete the deal.

Trio of firms take flight on E323m airline deal

Debevoise & Plimpton, Legance and Bonelli Erede Pappalardo have taken lead roles on Air France-KLM's purchase of a stake in Alitalia. The French-Dutch airline beat Lufthansa to buy a 25% stake in the Italian carrier at a much reduced price of €323m (£293m), after last spring's failed €1.5bn (£1.4bn) bid to buy a minority stake.Italian independent Legance advised Air France-KLM with a team led by corporate finance partners Filippo Troisi and Andrea Fedi. US firm Debevoise & Plimpton's Paris office advised the airline on the French aspects of the deal, led by office co-managing partner Patrick Laporte and international counsel Severine Canarelli.

Taylor Wessing secures triple hire in Paris

Taylor Wessing has bolstered its Paris arm after recent losses in the French capital with the hire of two new partners and a senior associate. The firm has moved to shore up the office with the hire of Simon Christiaen and Evelyne Friedel as partners. Christiaen joins from Landwell, where he was a partner, while Friedel arrives from Jones Day, where she was a counsel. Senior associate Valerie Aumage has joined from Field Fisher Waterhouse in Paris.Christiaen is an intellectual and industrial property lawyer with a particular focus on patent law related issues. Friedel focuses on economic and commercial law and is also a competition litigator.
