Gide Loyrette finds new IT partner in Ipsos GC

Gide Loyrette Nouel has appointed Thierry Dor as an IT partner in its Paris office. Dor joins from research group, Ipsos, where he spent two years as general counsel. Dor's arrival marks the beginning of his second spell in Gide's intellectual property, technology and electronic communications department, as he began his career as an associate there in 1990. His arrival at the law firm takes the total number of partners in the department to six.

A&O set for Munich launch with double Shearman hire

Allen & Overy (A&O) is to launch in Munich next month with the hire of Shearman & Sterling's Munich head Gottfried Breuninger and M&A partner Astrid Krueger. The departures will leave the US firm with only two partners in its Munich office and will heighten market speculation about Shearman's German arm, which saw its Mannheim office split away earlier this year (1 May) to set up independently as Schilling Zutt & Anschuetz.The Munich hires also mark A&O's third raid on Shearman's German practice this year as it brought in Shearman's global co-head of M&A, Hans Rolf Koerfer, and M&A partner Birgit Reese for its Duesseldorf office in January and March respectively.

Judge: Nixon Peabody did not 'steal' Taylor Wessing partners

Taylor Wessing has lost its battle to stop Nixon Peabody hiring 12 partners after a trial judge ruled the US firm violated no law despite agreeing to a two-year moratorium on recruiting from Taylor Wessing in the wake of failed merger talks, reports The American Lawyer. The ruling by Judge Kenneth Fisher calls into question the kind of non-compete agreements that make merger talks between firms possible, says Dreier name partner Marc Dreier, who represented Taylor Wessing in litigation stemming from those failed talks.Nixon management praised the ruling.

MTV emerging markets legal head steps down

MTV is looking for a new legal chief for its emerging markets division following the departure of the group's business and legal affairs head Robert Cummins. Cummins had been with the entertainment giant for almost two years after joining from technology company Sapient in October 2006.Roger James, MTV's head of legal for international and the UK, has now kicked off the search for a replacement to head the 12-strong team, which has lawyers based in the UK, Poland, Hungary and South Africa.

Orrick completes tie-up with German indie

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has sealed its German merger, with partners of the US top 50 firm and German corporate independent Hoelters & Elsing voting in favour of a union earlier this month (6 September). The tie-up, which follows months of discussions between the two firms, means that Orrick will operate in Germany as Orrick Hoelters & Elsing.Hoelters managing partner Arno Frings will now take on a position as partner-in-charge of Germany and has also landed a seat on Orrick's European supervisory committee, which will enable him to participate in Orrick's firmwide executive committee meetings.
