Battle for Italy market grows as Gianni and Legance build ranks aggressively

Italian independent Legance has increased its headcount by almost 40% since its high-profile split from elite practice Gianni Origoni Grippo & Partners in December. The growth means Legance now has 120 lawyers, up from 85 at the time of its launch, including Gianni's former managing partner, Giovanni Nardulli, who heads the new firm.

Garrigues boosts CEE presence with Bucharest base

Spanish leader Garrigues is to launch an office in Bucharest next week (1 July) - expanding its Central & Eastern European (CEE) practice to cover Romania as well as Poland. The office will be led by corporate partner Jaime Fuster and litigation partner Jacobo Sartorius. The pair, who launched their own firm in Warsaw in 2004, which then merged with Garrigues in January 2007, will remain based in Madrid but will spend much of their time overseeing the CEE operations.

DLA builds Russian banking team with A&O hire

DLA Piper has strengthened its Russian finance group with the hire of Vyacheslav Khorovskiy to head its banking practice in the country. The Russian-qualified partner joined the firm last month from Allen & Overy (A&O), where he was a counsel within the banking team. His practice focuses on syndications, trade and property finance as well as debt capital markets.

Beiten adds private equity vet to Munich

Beiten Burkhardt has hired former Hogan & Hartson partner Uwe Steininger in a boost for the German independent's Munich office. The private equity heavyweight will join Beiten on 1 July, having parted company with Hogan at the end of last month. Steininger, who is the former co-head of SJ Berwin in Germany, was previously based at Hogan's Munich arm.

Lovells loses M&A star to Taylor Wessing in Paris

Lovells M&A heavyweight Gilles de Poix has joined Taylor Wessing as a partner in its Paris corporate department. De Poix joined Lovells' corporate finance practice as a partner in 2001 after a 10-year stint at top French firm Gide Loyrette Nouel. He has also practised with Granrut Chresteil and Hughes Hubbard & Reed. The hire brings Taylor Wessing's Paris office to around 20 partners and 75 lawyers in total.

Vienna firm BPV Huegel has hired antitrust lawyer Rene Plank from the European Commission (EC). He joins as an associate. Since 2005, Plank has been employed by the Directorate-General for Competition of the EC and has been in charge of antitrust case-handling in the consumer goods section.

Czech firm Peterka expands to Bulgaria

Czech law firm Peterka & Partners is opening an office in the Bulgarian capital Sofia in response to demand from Czech investors in the country. It will be the third foreign office for the 70-lawyer firm, which also has offices in Slovakia and Ukraine. The new office will focus on commercial law, corporate, M&A, real estate projects, finance, intellectual property and employment law and will be headed by Martin Vacek.

Dentons cashes in on Dutch PPP project

Denton Wilde Sapte has secured a role advising the lead arrangers on the E600m (£474m) Coentunnel public-private partnership (PPP) project. The project, which reached financial close earlier this month (10 June), is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Netherlands and will see the development of a new tunnel and the renovation of an existing tunnel on the A10 ring road near Amsterdam.

On 16 January this year, the Milan Stock Exchange celebrated its bicentenary. It was in January 1808 when, by Napoleon's decree, Borsa Italiana was instituted at the original location of the Monte di Pieta, in the old commercial part of the town. Born as a public institution, and turned into a private joint stock company in 1998, Borsa Italiana has greatly expanded its business over the last 10 years in order to cover all services related to the exchange industry; listing to post-listing, from information services to facility and property management services. That process of development reached a crucial stage in 2007 by means of Borsa Italiana's merger with the London Stock Exchange (LSE), giving birth to the leading diversified exchange group in Europe.

Italian insolvency law keeps popping up on the political agenda. Following the collapse of dairy giant Parmalat, there was widespread recognition that a new legal framework was required for large-scale insolvencies. From 2003 through until the end of 2007 there have been four significant amendments to Italian insolvency laws. Happily, Parmalat is now in much better shape than before and many present this as proof that the reforms have been successful. However, as the credit crunch begins to bite it is becoming increasingly clear that the Italian distressed market still faces some difficult questions - and yet provides some clear opportunities.
