Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has taken the lead advisory role for Porsche as it moves to acquire a majority stake in Volkswagen (VW). Porsche, which already owns just under 31% of its fellow German automotive giant, plans to up its stake to more than 50%, subject to regulatory approval, with the additional shares currently valued at around €10bn (£7.7bn).

Farrer & Co has elected James Furber as its new senior partner, replacing Robert Clinton. Furber will take on the role for an initial three-year period from May. The firm is in the process of conducting a strategic review, looking at each of its 12 groups for the first time in 10 years. Farrers recently took on Ben Bennett in the new role of chief operating officer. Bennett joined from real estate consultants Cushman & Wakefield. His role replaces that of chief executive Andrew Mills Baker, who left last year.

Boitout becomes one of the first foreign arbitrators of the SCFA, part of the Shanghai Arbitration Commission. The Commission handles disputes related to international trade, finance and engineering, as well as internal economic disputes of Chinese and foreign firms.

Howrey sets up IP team in Madrid office

Sullivan & Cromwell has been drafted in to advise Microsoft on its landmark $44.6bn (£22.7bn) attempted takeover of internet giant Yahoo! after New York rival Simpson Thacher & Bartlett was conflicted out. Simpson Thacher last week confirmed that it had been forced to withdraw from the deal due to a conflict that could not be resolved. The firm had initially been handed the lead role for Microsoft, as reported by legalweek.com (4 February).

In contrast to their Italian neighbours across the Mediterranean sea, Spanish lawyers and law firms have been a model of stability over the years - particularly at the top end of legal practice. Despite the incursion of international firms, the entrance of the major accounting firms into the legal market and the breakneck growth of the Spanish economy, the legal sector has been characterised by the apparently serene progression of its leading law firms from small local players into some of continental Europe's largest and most successful independent law firms. In 2007, according to Mergermarket, the three leading firms - Uria Menendez (advising on deals worth E99.8bn (£71.8bn)), Cuatrecasas, (E34.7bn (£24.9bn)) and Garrigues (E49.6bn (£35.6bn)) occupied the first three positions, with other local leaders Gomez-Acebo and Perez-Llorca not far behind.
