Hammonds hit by latest Brussels partner loss

Hammonds has lost its third Brussels partner in less than six months, it has emerged, leaving the national firm with only three full-time partners in the Belgian capital. Jonathan Branton, who specialises in European Union and competition law, left Hammonds on 1 March and is set to join Irish firm Matheson Ormsby Prentice next month.

Dewey seals Galgano deal to add 20 in Milan

Dewey Ballantine has agreed the transfer of 20 lawyers from new Italian ally Galgano, it was announced today (12 March). Under the terms of the agreement, a total of 20 fee earners from the Italian firm join Dewey's Milan arm, with Galgano banking head Davide Contini, technology and communications chief Marco Consonni and corporate finance partner Alessandro Accinni all becoming partners at the New York firm.

A&O Amsterdam lands €11bn pharma deal

Allen & Overy (A&O) has landed a lead role advised US pharmaceuticals group Schering Plough on its €11bn (£7.5bn) acquisition of the medicines business of Dutch chemicals group Akzo Nobel. The A&O team was led by Amsterdam corporate partner Sietze Hepkema alongside banking partner Andrew Thomas and tax partner Olaf van der Donk. US advice was provided by banking partner Thomas Abbondante, capital markets partner Cathleen McLaughlin and senior banking counsel Julian Weldon.Leading Dutch independent De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek advised Akzo Nobel on the deal, with Sullivan & Cromwell advising on US aspects.The deal follows the sale last year by Akzo Nobel of former subsidiary Organon BioSciences, including human and animal medicines and a fledgling vaccines business.The latest deal is the second-largest M&A transaction in Dutch history, following the tie-up between Netherlands-based utility giants Essent and Nuon in a €24bn (£16bn) deal. A&O advised Nuon on the merger, with magic circle rival Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer acting on behalf of Essent.

Kirkland bags first Bridgepoint Capital deal with E500m German acquisition

US giant Kirkland & Ellis has bagged its first instruction from UK private equity house Bridgepoint Capital after advising on its acqui-sition of contact-lens maker Rodenstock from Permira, in a deal worth more than A500m (£339m). Munich head Volker Kullman led the team on the deal, which will close this month, along with German private equity partners Christian Zuleger and Frank Becker and London banking partner John Markland.

Slaughter and May best friend Hengeler Mueller has secured a plum role advising German conglomerate Siemens on the initial public offering (IPO) of its €7bn (£4.7bn) car parts unit. EADS appoints Kleinschmidt as new general counsel

Peter Kleinschmidt has been appointed as general counsel of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), replacing outgoing incumbent Diane de Saint Victor. Kleinschmidt made the move to EADS from Airbus in 2005 and will now lead a team of 120 lawyers in Paris and Munich. He will also be in charge of EADS' worldwide legal function. Kleinschmidt was given the role after de Saint Victor left for Switzerland-based power and automation technologies company, ABB. Last October, Clifford Chance acted for EADS on the E2.75bn (£1.85bn) purchase of BAE Systems' 20% stake in Airbus.
