Linklaters and Paul Hastings lead on bid for Spain's Campofrio

Linklaters and Paul Hastings took lead roles as Chinese meat processing giant Shuanghui International tied-up with Mexican food company Sigma Alimentos in a joint bid for share control of Spanish processed-meat business, the Campofrio Food Group. The deal, worth approximately $966m but still subject to approval, will see Sigma and Shuanghui combine their existing stakes in the company and offer €6.90 per share for the remaining stock. Together they currently own 82% of Campofrio's shares.

The recent deal struck by a Chinese property developer to redevelop the Royal Albert Docks is just the latest in a line of headline-grabbing, big-ticket property partnerships involving foreign investors in the London real estate market. It is also a clear signal that investors are starting to look beyond the steady income stream offered by 'safe' investments and take on the added risk of development projects. Several market surveys indicate that upwards of 75% by value of the acquisitions in the central London market during the past few years have come from overseas investors. This influx of foreign investment has helped the London real estate market to grow despite the recent financial downturn. It has also presented a new opportunity to law firm's real estate teams as they compete for a share of this lucrative business.

Norton Rose Fulbright is eyeing expansion into new markets in Africa and the west coast of the US, as the newly merged firm's transatlantic tie-up gets off the ground. The $2bn (£1.3bn) firm, which went live at the start of this week through the combination of Norton Rose and Texas firm Fulbright & Jaworski, is already considering further geographies into which it could expand. In Africa – where the firm currently has bases in South Africa, Morocco and Tanzania – Nigeria, Egypt, Mozambique and Angola have all been identified as potential destinations for office launches, while a move into northern California is also under discussion.

Post-merger Dentons plans first steps into Latin America

Dentons is planning its first moves into Latin America, with the newly merged firm considering a series of launches in countries including Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. Speaking to Legal Week, global chief executive Elliott Portnoy (pictured) said that the region was of "strategic and economic importance" to Dentons' clients, confirming the firm was actively looking at opportunities there. Following the merger of SNR Denton, Salans and Canadian firm Fraser Milner Casgrain in March, Latin America is the only continent in which Dentons does not have an office or alliance.

The Affinitas alliance - which launched in February 2004 - tied Garrigues with Argentine firm Bruchou Fernandez Madero & Lombardi, Mexican firm Mijares Angoitia Cortes & Fuentes, Bogota-based firm Gomez-Pinzon Zuleta, Miranda & Amado in Peru and Chilean firm Barros & Errazuriz.
