Eversheds expands in Africa with South Africa and Tunisia ventures

Eversheds has opened four offices across Africa through tie-ups with South African firm Mahons Attorneys and Tunisia's El Heni. The agreement with Mahons has handed Eversheds presences in Johannesburg, where Mahons has two offices, as well as Cape Town and Mauritius. The ten-partner firm will rebrand as Eversheds in the New Year.

Pinsent Masons has hired the chief executive of Australian law firm Maddocks to lead a review of opportunities for a launch down under. David Rennick will join Pinsents as a consultant early next year, with the task of presenting partners with a set of recommendations on opportunities in the Australian legal market. A spokesperson for Pinsents said: "We have made excellent progress towards achieving our vision of becoming a law firm of truly international reach, and as part of that programme of growth are giving careful consideration to how we can capitalise on opportunities in the Australian market."

DAC Beachcroft seals Colombian tie-up with insurance firm

DAC Beachcroft has merged with two-partner Colombian insurance firm De La Torre & Monroy Abogados Asociados. The new office which began trading yesterday (1 December) under the name DAC Beachcroft Colombia, will work with international insurers and reinsurers, advising on claims as well as arbitration, corporate, commercial and regulatory issues. DAC will also provide full service legal support for international investors in Colombia and local clients.

Female partner promotions fall 40% at Australia's big six firms

The number of female partner promotions at Australia's big six law firms has dropped by almost 40% in the last year despite an industry-wide push to boost gender diversity. Across the national partnerships of King & Wood Mallesons (KWM), Ashurst, Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF), Allens, Clayton Utz and Minter Ellison, just nine women made partner in 2013 out of a total of 35 internal promotions (26%), research by Legal Week has shown. This figure has dipped significantly since 2012, when more than 40% of all partner appointments – 24 out of 58 across the six outfits – were female.

Return of the independent – how independent law firms are outperforming global rivals in Germany

It is 23 years since international firms were first allowed to practise local law in Germany. Glance down the list of today's top 20 German firms (by number of lawyers and by revenue) and 75% of them are familiar magic circle names and Wall Street powerhouses, supplemented by a range of UK and US firms with global ambitions. It goes deeper: of the top 50 firms, barely a third are independent. But something interesting has been happening in Germany – from Frankfurt to Stuttgart, the independents are fighting back. Recent data shows that independent firms' annual revenues have increased by 6%-7%, the best figures among independents in all European jurisdictions, while their international counterparts have flatlined. Andreas Urban, managing partner at mid-size independent Heuking Kuhn, says: "There is stagnation among the top law firms – if you look at the top 10, many of them have relatively low growth rates, very flat. A lot of firms below that are developing higher growth rates. There is a shift by clients going to these firms."
