Cobbetts managing partner Shaw steps down after 16 years at helm

Cobbetts managing partner Michael Shaw has stepped down after 16 years at the helm of the north-west firm, with the news emerging weeks after merger talks with regional rival DWF broke down. Shaw, who helped build Cobbetts from a 175-strong Manchester office to a firm with 750 staff working from four offices across the UK and a base in Egypt, will remain at Cobbetts as a consultant.

The firms have reached a decision to formally terminate the joint venture, which has been in place since 2000, over the last few days, with one Linklaters' partner suggesting the venture will be wound down before the end of the financial year in April.

Freshfields confirms Singapore relaunch with lateral hires on the agenda

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's partnership council has given the go-ahead to plans to reopen in Singapore. The magic circle law firm is now set to relaunch the office in the third quarter of this year, only five years after shutting its former arm in the region. Freshfields has not yet applied for a licence in Singapore, but has confirmed that it intends to practise UK and US law initially, rather than pursuing any kind of domestic law venture with a local firm, despite moves to open up the market to foreign advisers. The firm is currently in talks with a number of lateral hires to staff the office and is also expecting to relocate partners to Singapore from the rest of its network.

Quinn Emanuel plans raft of office launches across Europe and Asia

US litigation specialist Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan has set out ambitious plans to expand across Asia and Europe. The firm has earmarked Germany, Switzerland and Singapore for office launches within the next two years, with an office in Hong Kong planned for a later date. Germany, where Quinn Emanuel launched a two-partner office in Mannheim in 2010, is expected to gain two new bases, with an opening in Hamburg expected imminently and a launch in Munich expected before the end of the year.
