Olswang extends alternative billing menu to all clients

Olswang has rolled out an alternative pricing menu across its entire client base, as the firm continues to move away from traditional hourly billing rates. The firm has issued all clients with a menu of eight alternative billing options, with the intention of moving away from hourly rates where possible. The move comes after the firm devised the pricing menu in May last year, initially targeting its top 150 clients.

Hogan Lovells confirms three City tax redundancies as consultation closes

Hogan Lovells is to make three associates in its London tax practice redundant following a consultation that started in November last year. The consultation was led by tax partner Karen Hughes, with four associates in the group placed at risk of redundancy owing to reduced work levels across the practice. Taking the redundancies into account, the London tax practice will now have six partners and 19 lawyers, working with clients including Barclays, ExxonMobil and Ford.

Taylor Wessing recruits COO and HR director with Linklaters and Deloitte hires

Taylor Wessing has made a double management hire with the addition of a chief operating officer and a human resources director. The firm has hired Linklaters' London HR director Caroline Rawes and Deloitte chief of staff Clare Singleton as HR director and COO respectively. Singleton will join next week (31 January), with Rawes set to move in May. The two roles, which will cover both the UK as well as international projects, were previously covered by COO Jonathan Croucher, who left the firm at the end of last year to become a full-time vicar.

Offshore law firms Appleby and Conyers Dill & Pearman have cut a number of jobs in Bermuda in response to reduced work levels in the region. Appleby has made 11 redundancies in Bermuda, including two lawyers, with business support units bearing the brunt of the cuts. The firm said it had taken the decision in response to reduced workflows over the last two years.

A couple of months ago on this blog, I asked an obvious question - now that times are better, why won't firms rehire some of those who were laid off during the economic downturn? I've heard from a few partners and headhunters who told me - off the record, of course - that those laid-off were not top drawer to begin with. The really good lawyers, they contend, were all kept on.

Trowers & Hamlins is set to make another round of job cuts in London and Manchester after confirming that turnover has fallen behind budget for the first half of the financial year.
