Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has signalled its commitment to its China practice with the firm relocating two partners from London and appointing its first-ever local chairman. China managing partner Teresa Ko is set to take on a new client-facing role as chairman of the China practice on 1 May, with her local management responsibilities passing onto Asia managing partner Rob Ashworth.

A looser grip? – a new style beckons at Linklaters

While it is common to overplay the significance of individuals within businesses, there is no doubt that the end of David Cheyne's term as senior partner at Linklaters will mark the end of an era for one of the City's proudest brands. That is less because Cheyne personally embodied Linklaters - like Nigel Boardman at Slaughter and May, he remained too individualistic and self-contained for that - but he obviously represented the spiritual heartland of the firm: its City corporate practice. Given the huge changes the firm has seen over the last 15 years, and considering the three candidates it is currently considering to replace him, the new senior partner will, to a certain extent, represent the new face of Linklaters, particularly in terms of the huge expansion in its banking practice and international network. A new senior partner also seems likely to signify a shift to a more contemporary or informal style - less so in age, but certainly in personal approach.

LawSoc election sees future president voted in

The Law Society has elected its future leader with the appointment of Nick Fluck as its new deputy vice president (DVP). The Law Society Council has voted in Fluck, a partner at Stapleton & Son in Lincolnshire, to take up the role from in July this year. The election means that Fluck, who is chair of the Law Society's technology and law reference group, will become Law Society president in 2013. He stood against Denis Cameron and Ian Kelcey in the vote, which closed yesterday (11 April).

Wareing is set to take over the senior partner role from Tony Wilson on 30 April, with Wilson to remain with the firm as an insurance partner in the firm's Liverpool office. Wilson has served as senior partner since 2001.
