The introduction of £9,000 annual tuition fees may not happen until 2012, but law course providers say interest in studying part time has been on the rise for some time. According to Sarah Hutchinson, the board member for business development at the College of Law (CoL), the tough financial climate is likely to have had both a positive and negative impact on the number of applications to law courses, including part-time programmes.

Even without another downturn, the outlook for law students remains far from rosy. The number of training contracts on offer last year shrunk to 4,874, a fall of 23% against its peak in 2007-08, while the pool of legal practice course (LPC) graduates without an offer continues to grow monthly. Yet law firms eyeing the uncertain market are in some cases still scaling back their future intakes. In this context, former Lovells lawyer Susan Cooper claims to have found a workable solution with her newly-founded business Acculaw. The unusual venture will see Acculaw offer training contracts to LPC graduates and oversee their development by providing training and seconding them to law firms.

Olswang signs up for touted new trainee temp business Acculaw

Olswang has become the first firm to sign up for a pilot scheme to accept trainee solicitors from Acculaw, a newly-launched body that will take on and second trainee solicitors to law firms. The company, which received approval this month from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), will offer training contracts to law graduates, who will then be seconded to City law firms and in-house legal departments in order to complete their training, with Acculaw ensuring that all regulatory requirements are met.
