Govt names first Legal Services Board members

The Government has appointed the first-ever members of the Legal Services Board (LSB), with Financial Services Authority general counsel Andrew Whittaker and Irwin Mitchell senior partner Michael Napier QC among those to get the nod. The board, which was appointed by Lord Chancellor and justice secretary Jack Straw, was announced today (17 July) and will see the nine-member body take up their roles on 1 September for a three-year period.

Pharma price-fixing case thrown out of court

Jones Day, Norton Rose and SJ Berwin have won a landmark case which has seen an estimated £40m Serious Fraud office (SFO) case against five pharmaceutical companies thrown out the Court. The decision, which was handed down by Mr Justice Pitchford today (11 July) will see the SFO's case against Goldshield, Norton Healthcare, Generics UK, Ranbaxy UK, Kent Pharmaceuticals and a number of individuals struck out.

An independent review into the Civil Justice Council has recommended that the body retain its role as an advisory public body. The review, compiled by Dr Jonathan Spector and commissioned by the Ministry of Justice in February, has made 27 recommendations designed to increase the relevance, value and visibility of the body's work to the users of the civil justice system.

Gibson Dunn secures hire of ex-Lord Chancellor

Former Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer has joined Gibson Dunn & Crutcher's London office as a senior counsel, the West coast US law firm announced today (8 July). The unusual hire, which saw Falconer join the firm yesterday, ends month of speculation over Falconer's future after he stepped down from Government last year.The move comes less than a year after former Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith QC, moved to the City arm of Debevoise & Plimpton to head its European litigation practice.

Billion-dollar RUSAL dispute set for UK courts

The long-running $4bn dispute between two Russian businessmen for a 20% stake of aluminium giant RUSAL is set to be heard in the UK courts. In a judgment handed down last week (3 July), Mr Justice Christopher Clarke confirmed Michael Cherney could pursue his claims against RUSAL owner Oleg Deripaska in England.Israeli-based businessman Cherney claims that as a result of a deal struck in London in 2001, Deripaska agreed to hold a 20% stake in RUSAL in trust for him.

Law Society calls for action on QLTT review

The Law Society is calling for the review of the rules governing foreign lawyers transferring to the UK to be hastened following guidance published by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) last week. The society has raised concerns that SRA guidance issued last week on the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) has still not addressed all of the criticisms levelled at it when it was first published in December 2007.
