Human rights cases drop for third year running

The number of cases brought in UK courts under the terms of the Human Rights Act has dropped by almost a fifth in the last year, according to new figures released today (16 February). A report published by Sweet & Maxwell Online shows that cases brought under the terms of the Act, which became law in 1998, dropped by 18% over the last 12 months from 497 in 2004-05 to 394 for the most recent 12-month period.

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has appointed officials to two newly-created roles - head of education standards and head of strategy and communications - the body announced today (13 February.) Planning, licensing and public law set 2 Harcourt Buildings is set to rebrand as Francis Taylor Building (FTB), after a £1m-plus investment in new premises. The 37-member set, based in Temple, will take on its new name on 12 February. The chambers has taken on twice the space of its current premises and will finally see all tenants working under one roof. FTB will have modern conference facilities that will be available for hire by other sets of chambers.
