Cleary boosts Moscow corporate team with US partner transfer

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has bulked up its Moscow office with the relocation of a partner from the US. New York-based corporate partner David Gottlieb has become the third full-time partner in the US firm's Russian base, alongside Scott Senecal and Murat Akuyev. The office also has around 30 associates.

Shearman set to boost Italy presence with Milan office launch

Shearman & Sterling is set to open its second office in Italy with the addition of a presence in Milan to its existing Rome base. Shearman is setting up the new office, due to open in January 2010, with the relocation of two Rome-based partners - corporate partners Tobia Croff and Fabio Fauceglia. The US firm will also transfer a number of associates who currently work in the Rome office.

Sullivan makes up four women and one London associate in promotions round

Sullivan & Cromwell has announced its annual round of promotions, with five made up to the partnership, including one in London. Of the five associates promoted, four are women. Sullivan chairman Rodgin Cohen attributed the growth in the firm's female partner ranks to policies such as flexi-time and maternity leave aimed at promoting and retaining greater numbers of women.

Magic circle trio check in for lead roles on BAA's £1.5bn Gatwick sale

Allen & Overy (A&O), Slaughter and May and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer have taken lead roles on airport operator BAA's £1.5bn sale of Gatwick airport to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). Slaughters took the lead for GIP, acting opposite Freshfields on the acquisition, which was agreed last night (20 October). The magic circle firm fielded a team led by corporate partner Mark Horton for the investment fund, which also owns London City Airport.

New book highlights Sullivan lawyer's central role in bank bailouts

It's not news that Sullivan & Cromwell's Rodgin Cohen was among the handful of key players who determined the course of last year's federal bailout. BDO/Jomati research reveals one third of firms expect a merger in next 12 months

One in three law firm managers expect to be involved in a merger or acquisition during the next year, according to joint research published by accountancy firm BDO and legal consultancy Jomati. The survey, which canvassed the opinions of management at 55 UK and international firms, reveals that two thirds of law firms have been involved in some form of merger or acquisition talks during the last 12 months, with 82% of those questioned stating that consolidation will be the greatest force for change in the legal sector in the coming years.

Clifford Chance (CC), Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Latham & Watkins have taken key roles on Qatar Holdings' sell-off of part of its stake in Barclays Bank. Freshfields, CC lead on CVC's $2bn buyout of AB InBev CEE breweries

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has advised key private equity client CVC Capital Partners on the biggest buyout of the year so far. CVC has agreed a deal worth $2.23bn (£1.36bn) to purchase the Central and Eastern European operations of Anheuser-Busch InBev across nine countries, in one of the largest private equity deals ever carried out in the region. The acquisition will give CVC control of the Staropramen beer brand.
