Iberia: Building the road ahead

Portugal currently has a significant public-private partnership (PPP) market, with several projects already concluded and many more in the pipeline. As a percentage of gross domestic product, the country has the highest level of investment in PPP/private finance initiatives (PFI) in the EU. Although the road sector is the most active, there is also a variety of other projects in sectors including energy, railways, waste, prisons, healthcare and airports.

Iberia: Remodelling the real estate market

The Bill introducing the long-awaited Sociedades Cotizadas de Inversion en el Mercado Inmobiliario (SOCIMIs) in Spain - similar to the UK's Real Estate Investment Trust (REITs) - was finally passed on 26 October 2009 after a complete change in circumstances resulting from the real estate crisis. Although the Spanish Government has been heavily criticised for not introducing REITs when the real estate market was at its peak, some experts consider that the introduction of SOCIMIs could be the appropriate incentive to restart the Spanish market.

The pair will launch CORE Business Lawyers in early March. The new business will focus on corporate and real estate transactions.
