DLA Piper lays off 9% of workforce in Middle East offices

DLA Piper has launched a second round of job cuts in the Middle East, with the firm cutting 9% of staff in the region, including one partner. In total, 22 staff will lose their jobs in the region, including nine fee earners. Staff were informed last week, with the cuts taking effect immediately.

Allen joined the top 40 firm's real estate group in London earlier this month (1 June) after four years at Olswang, including two as a partner. Before Olswang, he spent four years at Clifford Chance and five years at Norton Rose. As City law firms cut jobs and freeze pay levels, the public sector has become an increasingly attractive option to lawyers. Part of the allure is, no doubt, the relative security offered by government employers. But that's not the whole story. City associates who are tired of handling repetitive tasks such as due diligence and document review have long looked enviously at the more challenging work carried out by their peers in government bodies such as the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR) and the Treasury Solicitor's Office, but shied away from moving because of the carrot of law firm partnership and higher salaries. However, with uncertainty about future employment prospects – let alone partnership prospects – rife, increasing numbers have begun to consider a move into public service roles.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has lost a four-lawyer team in Berlin with the departure of public procurement partner Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann to K&L Gates. Hausmann will join the US firm along with principal associate Annette Mutschler-Siebert - who joins as counsel - and two other associates. Hausmann has been with the magic circle firm since 1996, making partner in 2002. He and his team advise on public procurement and public private partnerships (PPPs) as well as antitrust, state aid and trade.

Eversheds has been appointed as the preferred legal adviser for technology company Smiths Group in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The law firm will provide commercial, litigation, employment, real estate and company secretarial advice across the region, with London-based head of international litigation and dispute management John Heaps acting as the relationship partner to Smiths. Eversheds will use its global account management system - first developed for its relationship with Tyco - with the London Stock Exchange-listed Smiths.
