White & Case Rebuilds in London With Skadden Restructuring Hire

White & Case has made its first hire in London since the loss of six U.K. partners earlier this year. Skadden restructuring lawyer Chris Pilkington will join White & Case as a partner in April. He joined Skadden in October 2004 and was promoted to the rank of senior counsel there in May 2008. Pilkington will bolster White & Case's financial restructuring group in London, which lost highly rated restructuring lawyer Dan Hamilton to Ashurst last year.

Shearman Is Latest Firm to Revamp Pay for U.K. Associates

Shearman & Sterling is ditching associate lockstep for its lawyers in the U.K., Asia and the Middle East in favor of a merit-based pay system. The new system, which goes into effect May 1, will see all associates assessed twice a year against a number of criteria including client relationships, legal and technical capabilities and interpersonal skills. Associates will be placed into one of three tiers, with each level having maximum and minimum base salaries, which are yet to be decided.

Latham Transfers London Corporate Head to Dubai

Latham & Watkins is expanding its Middle East practice with several key attorneys transferring to the firm's Dubai office. Bryant Edwards, the head of the London corporate group, will be moving full time to Dubai at the end of this year, followed by M&A partner Charles Fuller. The firm hopes to have 15 associates and two more partners in Dubai by September. Latham unveiled plans to launch offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha earlier this year, making it the only U.S. firm with three offices in the region.

Bird & Bird Reports a 29 Percent Bump in Revenue

Bird & Bird has seen revenues soar by just under 30 percent during the last financial year in part boosted by a merger with a London boutique and a tie-up with a Finnish firm. The top 25 U.K. firm has reported gross revenues of 186.3 million pounds ($303.44 million) during 2008-09, a 29.6 percent increase from the 143.7 million pounds ($234.07 million by today's exchange rates) brought in during 2007-08.
