    Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and Clyde & Co have approved the largest-ever merger between two UK law firms, with the combined firm to operate under the Clyde & Co banner when it launches later this year. As Legal Week went to press, partners were set to formally sign the merger agreement yesterday (3 August), with the union set to go live on 1 November.

    Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and Clyde & Co have confirmed their merger deal following votes in favour of the move from both firms' partnerships, marking the largest-ever tie-up between two UK law firms. The votes, which took place yesterday (28 July) at Clydes and today (29 July) at Barlows, saw the firms achieve the 80% and 75% of 'yes' votes respectively required for a deal to go through.

    Barlow Lyde & Gilbert is set to ask nearly 10% of its partnership to leave if its merger with Clyde & Co is approved by both firms' partnerships this week. Around 10 of Barlows' 97 partners are expected to be asked to go as part of the terms of the tie-up. Of the remainder, at least 32 are expected to join the equity at the combined firm, compared with a current equity partner count of 64 at Barlows.

    Insurance and shipping firms have once again outpaced the UK top 50, with the firms seeing both revenues and profits per equity partner (PEP) increase by an average of 10.3%. The group, which comprises Clyde & Co, Barlow Lyde & Gilbert, Holman Fenwick Willan, Kennedys, Watson Farley & Williams, Ince & Co and Berrymans Lace Mawer, represents the only law firm grouping to see double-digit increases in both PEP
