Clyde & Co has expanded its corporate insurance team with the hire of Hill Dickinson partner William Tsang earlier this month. Tsang has joined as a partner in Clydes' City corporate insurance practice, however he is expected to relocate to Clydes' Hong Kong arm early next year as the firm bids to expand its corporate insurance practice in Asia.

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has been added to the claims panel of insurance giant Chartis following its takeover of the bulk of Halliwells' Manchester insurance arm, with the insurer also in the process of reviewing its non-claims legal panel. Barlows was added to the insurer's roster of firms for claims work last month, adding Chartis to the list of high-profile clients it has secured as a result of its July takeover of the Halliwells team. The firm has also retained work from AXA and NFU Mutual through the takeover, with Halliwells' insurance clients representing a major driver for the acquisition.

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert is in negotiations over further partner exits as the firm moves to overhaul the structure of its practice groups. Barlows is currently in discussions with four or five corporate partners and a number of associates about possible departures. The firm has recently merged its commercial litigation and arbitration practice with its professional and financial disputes group, with the new group led by partners Sarah Clover and Neil Jamieson.

The office, which will open on 1 October, will be headed by insurance and reinsurance partner Alex Guillamont, who is transferring from the firm's Madrid office. Solicitors wishing to terminate their retainer with clients intent on pursuing a hopeless case will draw comfort from a recent key decision by the Court of Appeal. It saw the Court support the solicitors' decision to terminate their retainer with their client in light of his desire to advance arguments that were not properly arguable. Richard Buxton (Solicitors) v Mills-Owens [2010] concerned a statutory appeal against the grant of planning permission. Counsel had advised the client that the appeal could only proceed on the basis of a procedural or legal error by the planning inspector and that only one of these grounds had a chance of succeeding.
