Signal in the City - why patchy mobile phone reception can be a deal-breake

The relationship between technology and productivity has long been a focus of debate. Whether it's having access to a faster processor inside a computer, using broadband on the go or simply making sure employees have access to a mobile phone (or smart phone) - the options for enhancing an employee's efficiency while working are almost endless. When looking at the mobile phone in particular, employees are not only able to make and receive calls, they can also keep up to date with emails on the go and use mobile applications to keep on top of administration work when out of the office.

Charging into the future - alternative billing is in the hands of in-house counsel

It is an oversimplification to suggest, as many lawyers now do, that the economic downturn has brought an irreversible and fundamental change to the delivery of legal services. I largely agree with those who claim that the genie cannot be put back into the bottle. But so far, the genie is only halfway out. What we have seen - and many clients find this promising - is that when pushed law firms can work under more competitive and imaginative fee arrangements and can even source more routine work in different ways.

Keep pushing - has the future finally caught up with Richard Susskind?

For more than a decade, futurist Richard Susskind has been preaching that the end is near. At vendor product launches and conferences, he has predicted that the generations-old model for the delivery of legal services will fail. Clients, he insists, will increasingly demand transparency and better, faster and much, much cheaper legal services. He argues that the profession must reframe its delivery systems to identify which work product is "bespoke".

A&O saves over £1m with IT outsourcing deal

Allen & Overy (A&O) has cut its overall IT spend by 10% during the past financial year, saving more than £1m through measures including the extension of an agreement with IT outsourcer Savvis to its European network. The magic circle firm confirmed that it has cut IT spend by 10% but would not be drawn on the precise figure saved, saying only that it was a seven-figure sum. A&O made the savings by axing servers in its international offices and expanding an existing deal with Savvis, which already held most of the firm's UK server space.

The slow trek forward - firms remain unconvinced of legal project management technology

Listen in on any gathering of IT directors and after the usual stories of budget battles, who's moving to the cloud and maybe a lament about not following mum's advice to study medicine, the conversation usually turns to legal project management. Not the 'what' of project management - successful IT departments mastered 'what' early on. Nor do the discussions linger on 'how' - Amazon.com lists more than 15,000 entries for 'IT project management' backed by consultants, classes and associations. It's the 'who' that prompts the most passionate debate - as in, 'who in my firm, besides me, believes the benefits of project management can be applied to the practise of law?'
