Erskine's Todd QC wins contested vote for Bar Council chairmanship

Michael Todd QC of Erskine Chambers has been named chairman-elect of the Bar Council following a contested vote. Todd will take up the post of vice chairman on 1 January 2011 and will progress to become Bar Council chairman a year later on 1 January 2012. His appointment follows a contested election against two other candidates -commercial barrister Richard Slater QC of 3 Verulam Buildings and criminal barrister Stephen Leslie QC of Furnival Chambers.

Bar Standards Board appoints new director

The Bar Standards Board has appointed a new director with Vanessa Davies to take on the role in December. Davies will replace Mandie Lavin in the top position at the Bar regulator after two years in the role for Lavin. Davies's appointment is for an unfixed term. Davies, a non-practising barrister, will join following a spell as director of operations at legal aid charity Refugee and Migrant Justice, where she was responsible for professional training, standards and compliance for accredited paralegals and caseworkers, as well as solicitors and barristers.

Is Howrey's model broke or can global litigation deliver?

Does the global litigation law firm model work? This disturbing question has been explicitly raised this month by news of a 12-partner exodus from the European network of disputes and intellectual property (IP) specialist Howrey. Indeed, departing partners from Howrey, who are heavily concentrated in the firm's Amsterdam and Brussels offices, have made much of the problems of working within a US-based firm. The argument goes that the US' generally stricter conflicts rules are a real hurdle for litigators operating in Europe, particularly when the bulk of the practice is weighted stateside, which makes it inevitable that American clients will get the upper hand in a close call on conflicts.

Baker Botts has made up two London lawyers to its partnership in the US firm's annual promotions round. A total of thirteen lawyers will join the partnership at the US firm as of 1 January 2011, a slight increase on the previous year when 10 were made up, including one in the London litigation practice.

Bar watchdog rolls out new scheme to monitor regulatory compliance of chambers

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has launched a monitoring scheme which will oversee chambers' compliance with the profession's regulatory regime. The scheme, which was launched by the regulatory body today (18 October), will require more than 700 chambers and sole practitioners to complete a compulsory online questionnaire. The questionnaire will focus on four key areas of regulation - complaints handling, pupillage, equality and diversity, and money laundering.

Halliwells' now infamous Spinningfields property deal is being investigated as the administration of the now-defunct law firm enters its next phase, it has emerged. The Spinningfields landlord, Credit Suisse Asset Management (CSAM), is seeking advice from Eversheds real estate litigation partner Will Densham to see if any money can be recovered from Halliwells. This includes looking over the controversial multimillion-pound payout received by Halliwells' equity partners in 2007.

Bakers takes US law role for Liverpool board as judge throws out attempt to block takeover

Liverpool Football Club's board have succeeded in their bid to push forward with the club's takeover after the High Court dismissed a temporary restraining order granted by a Texas court to US owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. The club's board, represented by One Essex Court's Lord Grabiner QC (pictured), returned to court today to apply for an anti-suit injunction to prevent Hicks and Gillett from continuing their legal action in the US.
