Legal Week chief reporter Claire Ruckin has won the Bar Council's 2010 legal reporting award for her extended feature on the collapse of Halliwells. The award for print journalism was presented by the Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC MP at the conclusion of the Bar Council's annual conference on Saturday (6 November). The broadcast category was won by BBC Radio 4's Thinking Allowed series for its coverage of white-collar crime.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has appointed a new joint leader for its financial institutions group (FIG), with City disputes partner Andrew Hart taking on the role. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Hogan Lovells have taken lead roles on the court dispute over Eurostar's order for German-built Siemens trains to run through the Channel Tunnel. Former CC associate sues firm for discrimination over job cuts

A former Clifford Chance (CC) associate has sued the firm for discrimination, claiming it targeted women and minorities when it laid off six US associates in 2007, reports The New York Law Journal. In a complaint filed on Thursday (28 October) in New York's Supreme Court, Karen Ramdhanie said that on the eve of the layoffs, two white male associates were transferred out of her group, leaving just black lawyers and women to be laid off. "They were so blatant in their discrimination," Ramdhanie said in an interview.

Barlows is currently in discussions with four or five corporate partners and a number of associates about possible departures. A global financial disputes tribunal to settle complex international disputes is set to be created in The Hague next year. The launch, which is slated for the first half of next year, comes as a result of a roundtable featuring leading lawyers and financial experts held at the Peace Palace in The Hague yesterday (25 October). The meeting, which was organised by Dutch not-for-profit organisation World Legal Forum (WLF), was chaired by former Lord Chief Justice Lord Woolf of Barnes.
