Criminal intent - key dispute trends from the Commercial Litigation Forum

If one theme stood out at this year's Commercial Litigation Forum, it was the encroachment of criminal law on the working lives of commercial lawyers. This issue was highlighted many times at the fifth forum, where Lord Grabiner QC headed up a senior line-up of judges, barristers and solicitors discussing the key dispute trends at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower in London on 15 September. During the morning panel discussion, The Creeping Criminalisation of Corporate Misconduct, the growing pressure on commercial law firms to recruit in areas such as white-collar crime, despite a previous reluctance, became apparent as clients become increasingly concerned over aggressive regulation and anti-corruption legislation.

Halliwells £4m liability dispute escalates as partners exit LLP

The dispute over Halliwells' outstanding £4m in property liabilities has come to a head after 90 ex-partners resigned from the defunct firm's limited liability partnership (LLP). Filings with Companies House confirm the resignations - including former chief executive Ian Austin and approximately 30 equity partners - which came after a resolution to alter the partnership deed was agreed earlier this month. The changes enabled partners to resign with immediate effect without having to serve a notice period.

Olswang seals hire of Bakers arbitration partner for London office

Olswang has strengthened its City litigation practice with the hire of an international arbitration and construction partner from Baker & McKenzie. Andrew Aglionby, who will join the firm's London office on 1 October, is based in Bakers' Hong Kong office in the firm's dispute resolution group. He has also headed up the firm's construction group in Hong Kong, as well as its international arbitration practice for the Asia-Pacific region.

Hogan Lovells litigation hire boosts Rome office

Hogan Lovells has recruited its first litigation partner in Rome with the hire of litigation head Massimiliano Marinozzi from local firm Mazzetti Rossi. Marinozzi joined the Anglo-US firm's litigation, arbitration and employment group this week after 16 years at his previous firm, 12 of which he spent as practice head. He will be the sole litigation partner in the office, heading up a team of five lawyers. He will work alongside group heads Francesca Rolla and Cristina Pagni, who are based in Milan.

Withers has relocated City lawyer Patrick Hamlin to Hong Kong to head up its litigation practice, as the firm gears up to start offering local law in the new year. Hamlin joined the Hong Kong base last month as the office approaches the completion of its third year since its 2008 launch. Under local guidelines, foreign firms have to be in the region for three years before they can start practising local law.
