Vilification of offshore 'tax havens' smacks of hypocrisy

Offshore jurisdictions - or tax havens to their detractors - have had a bad press recently. During a briefing on 4 May 2009, President Obama returned to a subject he first raised during his election campaign: a building in the Cayman Islands which is the registered office for more than 12,000 companies. This "outrage", said President Obama, is either "the largest building in the world or the largest tax scam in the world". The President supports the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Bill currently before US Congress.

BPP appeals for Bar students to defer two weeks into course

BPP Law School has been forced to appeal for volunteers to leave its Bar Vocational Course (BVC) and take up places next year. The move comes at the request of the Bar Standards Board (BSB), which gives BVC course providers validated numbers of students which they are not permitted to exceed. The email asking for volunteers to leave and re-enrol in September 2010 was sent on 17 September - 10 days after BPP's BVC started on 7 September.

Macfarlanes advises as Trafigura class action reaches £30m settlement

The long-running class action brought by 30,000 claimants against oil company Trafigura has settled for £30m. The settlement, approved by Mr Justice MacDuff yesterday (23 September) will see the claimants, represented by Leigh Day & Co, receive £950 each. The class action claimed that they were poisoned by 'slops' - toxic waste dumped near Abidjan, Ivory Coast in 2006.

Eversheds unveils 15-strong panel of preferred chambers

Eversheds has finalised its panel of barristers' chambers, with Brick Court Chambers among 15 sets winning a spot on the roster, which has been whittled down from 90 sets. In an unusual move the top 10 firm has also launched a secondment programme, which sees barristers from the selected chambers joining the firm for up to six months. The panel review, which was led by head of litigation Ian Gray and ran from March to July 2009, was prompted by Eversheds' desire to tighten relationships with a smaller number of sets. Those chambers making the panel include Fountain Court, Essex Court, One Essex Court, 4 Pump Court, 4 New Square and Henderson Chambers as well as Brick Court
