The judges singled out SJ Berwin's work advising on the £127m acquisition of Milton Gate in the City of London for the complexity of the work and its unusual financing. The team, which was led by partner David Ryland, advised investment house Evans Randall on its joint venture with Al Salam Bank, a Bahrain-based Islamic bank, to acquire and finance Addleshaw Goddard's new 200,000 sq ft City offices. It was one of the largest City of London office transactions this year.

Within three years of joining BASF's legal department Helen Koerner was appointed company secretary and de facto head of legal for its northern European operations. Koerner qualified in 2001 and started out her career as a property specialist. She joined BASF's legal department in 2004 to manage its property portfolio but was soon taking on a much broader role within the company.

CMS Moscow partner quits to join Magisters

CMS Moscow has lost a top-rated partner with Kirill Ratnikov moving to CIS heavyweight Magisters today (3 December). Ratnikov, who focuses on public-private partnerships (PPP) and corporate law, led the Moscow infrastructure and project finance group at CMS Moscow, having joined CMS Cameron McKenna's Moscow office in 2004 from Coudert Brothers. He began his career at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

Herbert Smith, Lovells and Maples Teesdale have all taken lead roles on the sale of the Grade II listed US Embassy building on Grosvenor Square. The Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company - which is owned by Qatar's sovereign wealth fund - has purchased the building in London's Mayfair, with the deal expected to be completed in 2013.

UK firms land roles on billion-dollar Abu Dhabi-Saudi motorway project

A raft of UK law firms have won roles as Abu Dhabi prepares for the largest-ever public private partnership project (PPP) in the UAE. Allen & Overy (A&O) is advising the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport, which is planning to build a motorway connecting Abu Dhabi with Saudi Arabia. Five bidders have been shortlisted to build the road from Mafraq to Ghweifat, with proposals for the estimated $2.65bn (£1.62bn) project to be submitted by 6 December.
