Mayer Brown offers London trainees £10,000 to defer for one year

Mayer Brown has offered its incoming London trainees the option to defer their training contracts in exchange for a one-off payment of £10,000, with three agreeing to postpone their start date by 12 months. The US firm's London arm, which takes on between 20 and 25 trainees per year across two intakes in March and September, asked a total of 47 future trainees across four intakes to defer by a year due to business activity levels.

Trio post retention rates as Wragges trainees turn down £5k deferral offer

Slaughter and May, Ashurst and SNR Denton have all posted healthy September trainee retention rates, with Slaughters set to keep on 91% of its newly-qualified (NQ) lawyers. Forty-two of Slaughter's 46 qualified trainees have been offered places at the firm, with the 91% figure marginally up on the firm's March intake this year, when 90% were kept on at the magic circle firm. A further two trainees resigned from the firm before the qualification process began.

Freshfields has offered 42 of its 46 February NQs a place at the firm, with 41 accepting. The magic circle firm also posted a retention rate of 89% for its spring intake last year.

Norton Rose, Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), SJ Berwin and Stephenson Harwood have all confirmed trainee retention rates for their first intake of 2012. Norton Rose has announced the details of its January 2012 qualifying round, with 18 newly-qualified lawyers (NQs) offered a position at the firm, equating to a 78% retention rate. The latest figures come after the firm kept on 14 of 16 (88%) of NQs in its September intake last year.

The research, conducted by the Chambers Student Guide, shows that 80.5% of 2,253 newly-qualified (NQ) lawyers at the firms surveyed were retained after qualification.

The northwest firm, which runs one trainee intake each year, is set to keep on all 16 of its trainee solicitors. The figure marks an increase on last year's retention rate of 89%, when 16 of the 18 lawyers in the intake were offered roles with the firm.
