Miami-based Akerman Senterfitt has doubled the size of its New York office with its acquisition of 21-lawyer Stadtmauer Bailkin, a firm specializing in economic development and land use. Akerman Senterfitt, which opened its New York office two years ago, has about 500 lawyers nationwide.

Attorney Asks Bush to Withdraw His Appeals Court Nomination

A Mississippi attorney has asked President Bush to withdraw his nomination to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, saying he doesn't believe the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee considers him a consensus nominee. Michael Wallace wrote the White House that he believes a majority of the Senate would consent to his nomination, but he said that incoming Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., has indicated he would not do so.

O'Melveny & Myers has recruited a four-partner bankruptcy practice from Stroock & Stroock & Lavan. The practice is led by Michael J. Sage, who will be co-head of O'Melveny's restructuring group. Virginia-based, 750-lawyer McGuireWoods has joined forces with North Carolina's Helms Mullis Wicker to form a 900-lawyer, 17-city firm. According to a press release from both firms, the merger will take effect on March 31. McGuireWoods' Charlotte office is currently its only presence in North Carolina. After combining with Helms Mullis, the firm will add offices in Raleigh, N.C., and Wilmington, N.C.

White & Case Handles Largest Bond Issue in Canadian History

White & Case has announced its representation in the sale of $11 billion in Canadian government-backed bonds, which the firm said is the largest bond issue in Canadian history and one of the largest sales of AAA-rated bonds by an entity other than a U.S. government-related issuer. White & Case advised Canada Housing Trust as issuer and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. as guarantor of the offering in the sale of Canada Mortgage Bonds to foreign and domestic buyers.

Ex-Associate Pleads Guilty to Trading Scheme

A former associate at Thacher Proffitt & Wood has been sentenced to 33 months in prison following his guilty plea to a $2 million insider trading scheme. Amir Rosenthal received inside information from his father, Zvi, about Taro Pharmaceutical Industries, where Zvi was a vice president. The company was not a Thacher client and no client information was used in the scheme.

U.K. to Be Europe's Class Action Capital, Says Survey

A poll conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit -- and sponsored by Bryan Cave -- shows executives see consumer goods companies in the United Kingdom as likely targets. The results come after U.S. class action specialist Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll said it was considering starting the U.K.'s first collective action, with a number of supermarkets and dairies set to be targeted over alleged price-fixing. The firm is currently leading a class action in the U.S. against U.K.-based Virgin Atlantic.

Fish & Richardson has recruited a New York intellectual property partner from Ropes & Gray. Duane David-Hough focuses his practice on patent and trade secret litigation and was part of the team that successfully represented Polaroid in its patent infringement suit against Eastman Kodak, which resulted in the award of $925 million, the largest amount ever awarded in a patent case. David-Hough worked on that case while at Fish & Neave, which Ropes & Gray acquired in 2005.

Miami-based Shutts & Bowen has opened a Tampa office, bringing the 175-lawyer firm's number of Florida locations to six. The four new attorneys moved to Shutts & Bowen from the Tampa office of Toledo, Ohio-based Shumaker Loop & Kendrick. The new Gulf Coast office focuses on corporate and financial transactions, commercial litigation and intellectual property and is expected to expand to 15 lawyers by the end of the year.

Proskauer Rose is set to make its entrance into the London market with the New York firm in talks to recruit the former head of O'Melveny & Myers' London arm to launch its U.K. law practice. Proskauer is in advanced discussions with O'Melveny private equity partner Matthew Hudson about leading the new venture -- ending months of speculation about its entrance to London. The London office would be Proskauer's 10th office overall but only its second in Europe alongside its Paris arm.
