Weintraub's Merger Talks With Stoel Stall
Merger talks between Stoel Rives and Weintraub Genshlea Chediak ended earlier this month, say partners from both firms. "Both our firms are enjoying a lot of growth in our area of expertise," says Weintraub partner Christopher Chediak. "Trying to combine these two firms might actually diminish some of the momentum in our respective areas." He is active in Democratic politics, appearing on a list of prominent diplomats supporting Hillary Clinton's presidential bid. He will hold the title of senior adviser at Sonnenschein.Conn. Suing Contractors Over University Law Library Project
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is suing the contractors and architects that built the Law School Library at the University of Connecticut. The action seeks $15 million, which includes the estimated cost of repairs, plus damages. The library, completed in 1996, was deemed a landmark that would last 100 years, but problems surfaced soon after its opening with leaks. "Instead of a landmark law library, contractors left a structural mess and legal morass," Blumenthal said.Fried Frank Loses Another Top Antitrust Partner
On the heels of losing the head of its antitrust practice to a rival firm, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson is losing another top antitrust partner. The Justice Department on Tuesday named Deborah A. Garza deputy assistant attorney general for regulatory matters. U.K. Law Firms Match Investment Banks on Trainee Pay, Survey Shows
Law firm trainees can now pocket amounts equal to graduate counterparts at investment banks, according to new research, with both camps taking home over �10,000 more than the U.K.'s average graduate starting salary. A new British survey shows graduates entering the legal profession received average pay of �35,500 in 2007. The results reflect significant pay raises for law firm juniors, while graduate salaries at investment banks dipped slightly from 2006's average of �36,000.Davis Polk Opens Beijing Office
Davis Polk & Wardwell has opened an office in Beijing -- its third in Asia, after Hong Kong and Tokyo. Though it has not previously had an office in mainland China, the firm has advised on some of the biggest deals in the region, including a $21.6 billion initial public offering.
