Freshfields, Cleary get mobile on Reliance and MTN merger

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton are advising on alliance talks between Indian mobile telecoms company Reliance Communications and African wireless company MTN Group. The pair, which between them have more than 116 million customers and combined annual revenues of around £7.3bn, announced that they were in exclusive talks about a possible merger late last month (26 May).

City trio fuel cross-border sale of Pearl energy to Abu Dhabi investment vehicle

Simmons & Simmons, Allen & Overy (A&O) and Lovells have landed roles on the $833m (£421m) sale of Singapore energy company Pearl Energy to Abu Dhabi Government-owned investment vehicle Mubadala Development Company. Simmons advised regular client Aabar Energy, the Abu Dhabi-based upstream oil and gas company that sold Pearl to Mubadala. The firm fielded a team headed by Abu Dhabi corporate and projects partner George Booth.

Dentons adds in Gulf with Kuwait capture

Denton Wilde Sapte has added to its network of offices in the Middle East after taking on the Kuwait office of US law firm Bryan Cave. The new office, which will operate as the Law Offices of Dr Ahmad Al-Samdan in association with Denton Wilde Sapte, numbers seven fee earners and will be headed by partner David Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer, a corporate and commercial specialist, previously headed the team at Bryan Cave and has practised in the Middle East for more than a decade.

Herbert Smith gets go-ahead for Abu Dhabi arm

Herbert Smith will open in Abu Dhabi later this month, after obtaining its long-awaited licence. Middle East chief Neil Brimson will relocate from Dubai to head the office. In addition, the office will initially be staffed with six associates. Brimson commented: "Having an office in Abu Dhabi will enable us to enhance our service to existing clients based in the Emirate and to participate in the extraordinary development of Abu Dhabi that will occur over the coming years."

Thomson Reuters takes on new GC for EMEA

Thomson Reuters has named a new general counsel for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with Daragh Fagan taking on the role. The company has also reshuffled the rest of its legal team, following its merger last year, with the legal team broken into distinct business units with separate general counsel. Fagan, who joined the company last September from Italian oil and gas giant ENI, also covers UK corporate governance. Fagan said the company will review its network of external legal advisers either this year or next.
