CC and Latham advise on Singapore's second biggest IPO this year

Clifford Chance (CC) and Latham & Watkins have acted alongside Allen & Gledhill (A&G) and Wong Partnership on the Singapore listing of Asian Pay Television Trust (APTT), the Asian city-state's second biggest IPO this year. The investment vehicle, which will own Taiwan's third-largest cable TV operator, Taiwan Broadband Communications (TBC) Group, has priced its IPO at S$0.97 (£0.51) per unit, in the hopes of raising S$1.4bn (£734m) from the listing.

Hong Kong ranks third most popular destination with expat lawyers - survey

Hong Kong is the third most popular destination in the world for expatriate lawyers, according to a new report commissioned by business school ESCP Europe and recruiter Hydrogen. Some 9% of legal professionals surveyed ranked the North Asian financial hub as their preferred relocation destination, beating Australia, which was the favourite of 7%, and Canada which was number one among 6%.

Brick Court secures global mediation capacity

Brick Court Chambers has secured its first major international mediation capacity through an alliance with leading New Zealand mediator Geoff Sharp. Sharp is one of three new door tenancies secured by the London set, alongside Scotland-based John Sturrock QC and Fidelma Macken in the Republic of Ireland. He will remain a member of Clifton Chambers in Wellington, and is admitted to practise as a barrister in New Zealand, as well as being an accredited mediator in Australia.

Cautious optimism reigns across industry as partners hope for economic bounceback

As the number of firms announcing redundancy consultations this week continued to rise – with news of widespread cuts at Berwin Leighton Paisner – new research from Legal Week has found a surprising degree of business confidence among partners in UK law firms. Results of the latest Big Question survey how that more than 90% of partners expect to see revenues climb at their own firm over the next 12 months, with more than 80% expecting the same to be true across the UK's 50 largest law firms by revenue as a whole. The research found more than half of respondents (53%) expect to see revenue at their own firm climb by more than 5% over the coming year, with a further 41% predicting more modest increases of between 0% and 5%. Meanwhile, only 6% of partners expect to see their firm's revenues fall.

A&O, CC among firms pushing for renewal of Singapore law licences

Six international law firms awarded licences in Singapore's first Qualifying Foreign Law Practice (QFLP) round will need to secure a renewal next year if they wish to continue practising local law. Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance (CC), Herbert Smith Freehills, Norton Rose, Latham & Watkins and White & Case were the first group of foreign firms to be granted local licences in Singapore in 2009 as part of the Govern-ment's initiative to liberalise the legal market.

A raft of US law firms have acted on the take private of AsiaInfo-Linkage, the latest Chinese company to de-list from a US bourse through a management buyout. The Chinese telecom software provider this week said it had accepted an offer to be acquired by a private investor consortium led by CITIC Capital Partners and AsiaInfo-Linkage co-founder Edward Tian, which values the company at $890m and would see it removed from Nasdaq.

Rhie, who specialises in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration, is an English-qualified solicitor-advocate, and will relocate from Seoul to Hong Kong where he will chair Quinn's Asia international arbitration practice. Rhie, who will be a partner at Quinn, represents clients in the construction, ship building and investment banking sectors on issues ranging from contractual disputes to obtaining or defending urgent injunction applications.
