Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan has announced plans to launch in Australia following the hire of two Herbert Smith Freehills partners. The Los Angeles litigation firm has recruited disputes partners Michael Mills and Michelle Fox from Herbert Smith Freehills in Sydney, and will be joined by IP litigation partner James Webster who is relocating to Australia from LA.

London partnership prospects sink as promotions at UK top 30 drop by 17%

London partnership prospects at the UK's top 30 law firms have dipped significantly this year, alongside a fall in partner promotions across almost all regions. The number of London partner promotions at the UK's 30 largest law firms by revenue dropped to 101 this year, down 17% on last year's figure of 121, with City promotions accounting for just over one quarter of all promotions across the group, down from 30% last year. In total, 370 partners were made up across the UK top 30, down 8% on last year's equivalent figure of 401. Asia has also seen a drop-off in promotions this year, after a tough period for the region in which work levels have fallen and many firms have cut jobs, with the total number of new Asia partners at top 30 firms down by one quarter to 30 from 40 in 2012.

Links leads as Unilever ups stake in Indian subsidiary

Linklaters has won a key role for Unilever on a $5.4bn (£4.5bn) deal to increase its stake in Hindustan Unilever, the publicly listed Indian subsidiary of the consumer goods giant. The purchase, announced last week, saw Unilever's interest in the Indian business rise from 52.48% to 75%, at a price of INR600 (£7.15) per share. The deal is the largest single investment in the Indian consumer goods sector. "This represents a further step in Unilever's strategy to invest in emerging markets and offers a liquidity opportunity at what we believe to be an attractive premium for existing shareholders," said Unilever CEO Paul Polman.

Hong Kong aims to simplify local qualification system amid fierce competition for places

The Law Society of Hong Kong is considering an overhaul of the exam system for graduates and foreign lawyers seeking to become locally qualified, with a consultation on the subject set to be issued this month. The plans for reform, which were first announced in July last year, include the proposal to scrap the existing assessment procedures at three Hong Kong universities – the University of Hong Kong (HKU), City University and Chinese University – to create one common law exam. Hong Kong law graduates currently have to complete the Postgraduate Certificate of Laws (PCLL) before being awarded a training contract. The one-year course is offered by the three universities, each of which have a limit on the number of students they can take.

Ashurst and Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) have landed key roles on Samsung SRA Asset Management's acquisition of London's 30 Crown Place, in the Korean fund manager's first overseas investment. The sale of the 192,070 sq ft office building, the London base of Pinsent Masons, is reportedly valued at £142m. Ashurst advised Samsung SRA – a new client of the firm – and Cushman & Wakefield Investors, fielding a team led by real estate partners David Jones and Sarah Watkinson and tax partner Paul Miller.
