Letter from Asia: Should US firms build local practices in Hong Kong?

The Agricultural Bank of China's initial public offering (IPO), expected to become the world's largest, debuted this week, landing squarely in the middle of a debate over whether leading Wall Street law firms should build local practice capability in Hong Kong. The IPO on the Hong Kong and Shanghai exchanges would seem an obvious rallying cry for those arguing that top US capital markets firms will miss out on deals without their own Hong Kong lawyers - except that the lead lawyers on the AgBank deal are from New York's Davis Polk & Wardwell, which only practises US law.

Minter Ellison posts A$503m to top Aussie revenue rankings

Minter Ellison has become Australia's largest law firm by revenue after posting a marginal increase in turnover for the 2009-10 financial year. Fee income at the firm increased by 2% to A$503m (£286m) this year, up from A$493m (£280m) in 2008-09. The results place the firm ahead of rival Mallesons Stephen Jaques, which last year led the rankings with turnover of A$552.6m (£314m). This year Mallesons has seen income decrease 10.5% to A$494.4m (£281m).

Allen & Overy (A&O) has added to its Australian arm with the hire of energy partner Angus Jones from Allens Arthur Robinson. Jones is set to join the firm's global energy group in Perth on 1 October after 13 years as a partner at Allens Arthur.

Australian firm Allens Arthur Robinson has bulked up its Singapore arm with the hire of Clifford Chance (CC) finance partner Rod Howell and the relocation of three partners from across its offices. Howell rejoins the Slaughter and May 'best friends' firm after he left in 1997 to join CC, where he made partner in 2005.

Squire Sanders' Japanese arm merges with local law firm

Squire Sanders & Dempsey has bulked up its Asian arm through a merger with Japanese firm Miki & Yoshida Law and Patent Office. The firm originally entered into a joint enterprise with Miki & Yoshida in 2001 in order to give clients access to Japan-licensed lawyers. The agreement ended in 2005 when Japan's legal industry regulations changed. The office of the merged firm will be known as Squire Sanders Miki & Yoshida.

DLA Piper corporate partner quits Shanghai base to join US firm

Winston & Strawn has added to its Shanghai base with the hire of DLA Piper partner Bertrand Theaud. Theaud joins from DLA Piper's local office and will focus on corporate law, in particular M&A and private equity. Theaud has experience of domestic and cross-border deals for French and other foreign clients in da number of industries, with a particular focus on the retail and chemical sectors.

Herbert Smith wins role on record IPO of Chinese banking giant

Herbert Smith has won a role on what is set to be the world's largest-ever initial public offering (IPO) as the Agricultural Bank of China (AgBank) goes public. The UK top 10 firm is advising the underwriting banks on the landmark listing, which was initially valued at as much as $30bn (£20.2bn), although market estimates have since been tempered by a drop in China's stock market, with a figure of $23bn (£15.5bn) now thought to be more likely.

Simmons & Simmons has made its first partner hire to launch the firm's new Beijing base, with M&A specialist Davis Wang set to join from China's King & Wood.
