Chiomenti in Asia boost after Birindelli tie-up

Chiomenti has secured a major boost for its Asian coverage after agreeing to merge with Birindelli & Associati - one of the first Italian firms to launch in China. The two firms will combine under the Chiomenti banner from 1 May, with the Italian leader taking over Birindelli's offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, Hanoi and Pyongyang, which together house around 25 lawyers.

Lovells hires boost White & Case HK finance

White & Case has boosted its Hong Kong arm with the hire of a four-lawyer finance team, including partner John Hartley, from City giant Lovells. Hartley joined the US firm's banking, finance and restructuring practice in Hong Kong earlier this month (7 April) along with three associates. He is dual-qualified in Hong Kong and the UK and has represented banks on a range of cross-border finance deals in the China region.

Summerly specialises in sectors including telecommunications and oil and gas, having focused on cross-border work in markets including Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.

DLA Piper is to formally launch in Abu Dhabi later this month, with projects and finance partner Stephen Webb - currently based at the firm's Dubai office - appointed office managing partner. The new office is expected to have around 10 lawyers by the end of the month, including three partners. In addition to focusing on projects work, Webb expects the office to cover corporate and construction work as well as media and film financing issues.

A&O, CC underline global focus with more overseas promotions

Allen & Overy (A&O) and Clifford Chance (CC) have unveiled their new partner promotions, with both firms seeing a decline in the overall number of partner promotions compared with last year, but an increase in promotions in overseas offices. A&O promoted 28 associates to partner, down from 32 last year, while magic circle rival CC named 35 new partners, down from 38 in last year's promotion round.

Big-ticket mining bids drive McCarthy to top spot in Q1 global M&A rankings

McCarthy Tetrault has topped the value table for global M&A deals for the first quarter of 2008, knocking Sullivan & Cromwell and Linklaters into second and third place respectively. Mergermarket's global rankings for Q1 show the Canadian firm advised on 17 deals over the period with a value of $319.2bn (£160.4bn) including roles on the two largest deals of the quarter - BHP Billiton's $211bn (£105.7bn) bid for Rio Tinto and Altria's $106.9bn (£53.7bn) bid for Philip Morris. The Canadian firm also topped the value list for Q1 in 2007 but ended the year ranked 20th, with Sullivan heading the tables.

O'Melveny Beijing head joins Davis Polk

Davis Polk & Wardwell has made a rare lateral hire in Asia, bringing in O'Melveny & Myers Beijing head Howard Zhang. M&A heavyweight Zhang joined the New York leader at the beginning of this week (7 April). Davis Polk launched its Beijing office in February 2007 but has had an office in Hong Kong since 1993, with the firm's China practice now comprising around 25 lawyers.
