Freshfields heads up firms on ING restructuring and €7.5bn rights issue

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Sullivan & Cromwell and Stibbe have all landed roles on ING's restructuring, which includes a €7.5bn (£6.8bn) rights issue. Sullivan and Stibbe have been instructed to advise on the bank's rights issue, which was launched yesterday (26 October) as part of a wider restructuring that will see the Dutch banking giant split into two.

Shearman set to boost Italy presence with Milan office launch

Shearman & Sterling is set to open its second office in Italy with the addition of a presence in Milan to its existing Rome base. Shearman is setting up the new office, due to open in January 2010, with the relocation of two Rome-based partners - corporate partners Tobia Croff and Fabio Fauceglia. The US firm will also transfer a number of associates who currently work in the Rome office.

PLMJ network forms CEE alliance with two international launches

PLMJ has established a 'best friends' network across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), with the firm also launching two new international offices. The Portuguese firm has set up best friend relationships with CEE firms including Austrian heavyweight Wolf Theiss, leading Polish firm Domanski Zakrzewski Palinka, Czech firm Kocian Solc Balastik and Hungary's Szecskay. PLMJ also hopes to add relationships in Ukraine, Slovenia and the Baltics.

Clifford Chance names finance partner as new Amsterdam chief

Clifford Chance (CC) has appointed a new Amsterdam managing partner, with finance specialist Bas Boris Visser taking over the role today (16 October). The election of Visser was unanimous and will see him take on the role for a four-year term. He succeeds current Amsterdam head Jan ter Haar, who was last month appointed as CC's next Moscow managing partner, after the announcement that Russia and CIS managing partner Michael Cuthbert is to retire.

A&O takes top role on €1bn leveraged finance deal

Allen & Overy (A&O) has advised on the €1.025bn (£955m) financing of the acquisition of a majority stake in Italian natural gas distributor Enel Rete Gas (ERG). The magic circle firm drafted in a team from its City headquarters to advise a consortium of 11 banks financing the deal, led by longstanding clients JP Morgan and Banca IMI. London projects partner Conrad Andersen took the lead for A&O, with leveraged finance chief Tim Polglase assisting.

A trio of US firms have taken lead roles on a series of deals in Central and Eastern Europe which will give buyout house Mid Europa Partners a controlling stake in Hungarian telecoms company Invitel. Shearman & Sterling, White & Case and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett were instructed on the deals, which involved both debt and equity acquisitions and have been valued by Mergermarket at a total of £678m.

A trio of Australian expatriate lawyers working at their own firm in Kazakhstan has been found guilty by a Sydney court of conspiring to steal clients and millions of dollars in fees from another expat-led firm at which they once worked. The Australians - John Forster Emmott, a former partner of legacy UK firm Richards Butler; Robert Nicholls, an ex-partner at leading Australian firm Freehills; and David Slater, a former in-house lawyer at Australian bank Westpac - reportedly lured oil and gas clients from the Almaty-based firm Michael Wilson & Partners.
