CC and Freshfields help VW and Porsche tie the knot

Clifford Chance (CC) and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer have advised Volkswagen and Porsche as the two European car icons took the first step in creating a combined company that could challenge Toyota's dominance in global auto sales. Under the terms of the new merger agreement, VW will initially spend $4.7bn (£2.9bn) to acquire a 42% stake in Porsche as the first step in a long-term combination that will be finalised by 2011. Volkswagen will issue new stock in 2010 to fund that purchase.

Linklaters names Stockholm banking chief as new Nordic head

Linklaters has appointed a new Nordic managing partner, with Stockholm banking and finance head Per Nyberg to take over the role for a four-year term. Nyberg will replace current managing partner Peter Hoegstroem from 1 September, with Hoegstroem set to return to full-time fee earning in the firm's Stockholm office.

Beachcroft has strengthened its Irish practice with the hire of a four-lawyer team from local firm Mason Hayes+Curran. The national firm has hired four clinical negligence lawyers led by Ann O'Driscoll to its Dublin office. O'Driscoll, who was previously a partner in the Mason Hayes' litigation and healthcare practice, advises healthcare professionals and hospitals on clinical negligence and risk management issues. She brings with her two associates and a legal executive.

Gide Loyrette Nouel has elected its head of international, Christophe Eck, as its new firmwide managing partner, with the appointment set to take effect from 1 January next year. The Paris-based corporate partner, who oversees the firm's international strategy, will replace current head Xavier de Kergommeaux, who will return to full-time fee earning after serving three two-year terms in the role.

Weil Gotshal & Manges and Baker & McKenzie have taken lead roles on the €250m (£212.2m) private equity disposal of two European food distribution companies. South African trading and distribution company Bidvest is to acquire the Czech Republic's Nowaco and Poland's Farutex from funds associated with JP Morgan, and managed by CCMP Capital Advisors, and from Bancroft Private Equity.

Linklaters is set to lose a partner in Germany as Berlin-based real estate partner Jens Bock quits to join a local firm. Bock is leaving the magic circle firm to join Clifford Chance (CC) spin-off Sammler Usinger, along with M&A counsel Thomas Rieger. The duo will both join Sammler as partners, with Bock making the move on 1 September and Rieger on 1 November.
