Nabarro's former Spanish alliance firm loses partner duo

The Madrid managing partner of Nabarro's former Spanish ally Rodes & Sala has left to join a local firm. Julio Veloso, who specialises in corporate work, has joined Broseta along with tax partner Javier Morera and two associates from Rodes & Sala's Madrid office. Veloso will now head the private equity and venture capital team at Broseta - which has offices in Valencia and Madrid - alongside Morera.

Linklaters has secured a significant boost to its Spanish offering with the hire of Cuatrecasas partner Francisco Malaga to head up the firm's litigation practice in Madrid. Malaga will be the firm's first litigation partner in the region, although the magic circle firm already has five associates in the practice. He will take the partner count in the 70-lawyer office to 12.

NCTM recruits from A&O to drive China ambitions

Italy's NCTM has taken a first step towards launching in China with the hire of Hermes Pazzaglini from Allen & Overy (A&O) in Shanghai. Pazzaglini, who was a senior associate with A&O, has joined the expansive Italian law firm as a salaried partner. He will remain in China and split his time between the mainland and Hong Kong. NCTM does not yet have offices in mainland China.

Magisters has lost co-founding partner Oleg Riabokon as he leaves the leading CIS firm to take up a career in Ukrainian politics. Riabokon will depart the firm today (4 September) but is yet to announce what public office he will be running for in Ukraine. Riabokon stepped down as Magisters' managing partner in March this year after 18 years in the role, handing over leadership to a strategic council of partners.

Shearman & Sterling is set to lose its only two Brussels-based partners to US rival Arnold & Porter. Shearman's local office head Annette Schild is joining Arnold & Porter in the Belgian capital, along with fellow partner Silvio Cappellari and counsel Stephanie Birmanns. All three lawyers focus on competition and antitrust and have advised high-profile clients including Arriva, BASF, Siemens and Novartis.

Linklaters and Allen & Overy (A&O) have taken lead roles on the €12bn (£10.3bn) debt restructuring of ball-bearing manufacturer Schaeffler, in a move which could lead to a merger with auto-parts manufacturer Continental. Linklaters advised a consortium of five lending banks comprising UBS, Royal Bank of Scotland, UniCredit, Commerzbank and LBBW, with London and Frankfurt-based banking partners Stephen Lucas and Marc Trinkaus leading the team.

Clifford Chance (CC) has appointed a new managing partner for its Kiev office, with finance partner Jared Grubb to replace Nick Fletcher in the role. Grubb, who joined CC from the Moscow office of CMS Cameron McKenna in 2007, focuses on bank lending, financing and debt restructuring in Russia, Ukraine and other CIS countries. He relocated from Moscow to Kiev in May.
