Nabarro exits Weil Gotshal after two-year stay

High-profile banking partner Jonathan Nabarro has left Weil Gotshal & Manges after little more than two years with the New York firm, it has emerged. Weil confirmed that Nabarro, who was co-head of the firm's Paris banking practice, left the firm on 31 March. His next move is as yet unconfirmed.

Norton Rose has bagged a new partner for its Warsaw practice with the hire of energy specialist Rafal Hajduk from CMS Cameron McKenna. Hajduk joins Norton Rose Piotr Strawa & Partners from Camerons' local office on 1 May as a partner in the energy and projects team. His practice centres on companies in the electricity, gas and oil sectors, providing advice on regulatory issues, emissions allowances and oil trading.

Shearman and Cleary gear up for mammoth Yukos dispute

Shearman & Sterling and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton have taken leading roles in what could become the largest-ever international arbitration case - a claim against the Russian Federation that could amount to as much as $100bn (£50bn). The claim, which is due to go before the Permanent Court of Arbitration tribunal in The Hague in November this year, relates to the bankrupt Yukos Oil Company and sees Shearman advising Yukos's majority shareholders, GML (formerly Group Menatep), with Cleary taking a role advising the Russian Federation.

Linklaters has lost a team of eight intellectual property (IP) lawyers as the magic circle firm continues to reshape its German practice. Partners Stefan Lutje and Georg von Wallis will join Olswang in Berlin on 1 May as partners in the media, communications and technology (MCT) practice. They will be joined by Viola Bensinger, who will become a partner at the firm, and five associates.

Benelux leader Loyens in Islamic finance push

Loyens & Loeff has launched an Islamic finance practice - in a move thought to make Loyens the first Benelux firm to target the sector with a dedicated team. The launch follows the hire of Islamic finance specialist Marjorie Sinke, who joined Loyens as of counsel in February to head up the new team. Sinke - a former judge at The Hague - joins Loyens after running her own Islamic finance consultancy. She was also previously an associate at Benelux giant Stibbe.

UBS general counsel Peter Kurer will be the next chairman of the Swiss banking giant, it was announced today (1 April), with current chair Marcel Ospel opting to stand down after major losses suffered by the investment bank. Kurer, who joined UBS in 2001 as group general counsel and has been a member of the group executive board since 2002, is poised to take charge after the group's annual general meeting later this month (23 April).

French independent takes Asia team from rival

UGGC & Associes, the French ally of UK national giant Addleshaw Goddard, has extended its reach overseas after taking on the entire Asian practice of domestic rival Adamas. The deal adds 25 lawyers and branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Taipei to UGGC's network of offices, which also includes outposts in Brussels and Casablanca. Adamas partners Franck Desevedavy, Olivier Dubuis, Olivier Lefebure, Alina Quach and Arnaud Depierrefeu all transfer to UGGC as part of the move.

CC squares up to Budapest discrimination claim

Clifford Chance (CC) has been hit with a sexual discrimination claim by a former employee, with the City giant set to defend itself in court next month. Maia Christie, who was a solicitor with the magic circle firm in Budapest for more than 10 years, claims that CC discriminated against her after she fell pregnant. The claim alleges that CC failed to pay her the contractual maternity package described on the firm's internal website and that she was the only fee earner in the Budapest office who did not receive a pay-rise in July 2004.
