Chiomenti in Asia boost after Birindelli tie-up

Chiomenti has secured a major boost for its Asian coverage after agreeing to merge with Birindelli & Associati - one of the first Italian firms to launch in China. The two firms will combine under the Chiomenti banner from 1 May, with the Italian leader taking over Birindelli's offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, Hanoi and Pyongyang, which together house around 25 lawyers.

DLA Piper has boosted its Rome litigation and regulatory team with the hire of Alfonso Celotto, the former head of the legislative office at the Ministry of European Affairs. Celotto is an expert in public law and has lectured at institutions including the Luiss University in Rome. He has represented clients at Italy's supreme administrative court, the Consiglio di Stato, and the constitutional court.

Bakers makes slick move with lead role on $2.25bn Russian oil merger

Global law firm Baker & McKenzie has taken a lead role on a cross-border merger worth $2.25bn (£1.14bn). The firm advised West Siberian Resources as it merged with Alliance Oil to form a combined oil company operating across Russia and Kazakhstan. The mandate is a coup for the firm's corporate team, which worked opposite Clifford Chance (CC) on the deal, which took three months to complete.

Bird & Bird has launched a dedicated competition practice in Spain with the hire of a partner from DLA Piper. The top 30 UK firm has hired Antonio Creus as a partner in its Madrid office to lead the new practice group. Creus has more than 20 years' experience advising on competition matters before the European Commission and had been a partner at DLA since 2004.

Finnish firm Roschier has hired a leading dispute resolution partner in Sweden. Claes Lundblad will head the practice group in Stockholm, joining from Swedish giant Mannheimer Swartling. The hire gives Roschier its first entrance into the Swedish arbitration market. Office managing partner Axel Calissendorff said: "Having already established a strong transactional practice in Sweden, the timing was right to move on to dispute resolution."
