Partner numbers across top 50 grow 7% as equity partner ranks see more modest rise

Partner numbers across the UK top 50 have grown almost 7% this year, as a number of significant mergers continue to drive headcount growth at leading law firms. Across the 2012-13 financial year there were an average of 10,115 partners working at the top 50 firms, up 6.9% from 9,458 the previous year. Following a spate of mergers, DWF saw the largest growth in partner numbers across the group, leaping from 152 to 285 over the year as a result of tie-ups with Biggart Baillie, Fishburns and Buller Jeffries as well as taking on a number of partners from now defunct Cobbetts.

The move, which will see the transfer of four partners and 20 staff, is the first acquisition by the Knights since the James Caan-led private equity house Hamilton Bradshaw bought a stake in the firm in June 2012.

Minter Ellison has launched a tax practice in Asia with the hire of two tax specialists from Ernst and Young in Hong Kong. The Australian firm, which earlier this month said it wanted to boost the amount of regional work it did in a bid to combat a sharp decline in domestic M&A activity, has recruited the E&Y duo Christian Pellone and Edward Lean to join its Hong Kong office and to spearhead the new practice for the whole of Asia Pacific.

Mishcon de Reya has appointed Olswang head of construction Nick Lane to join its property litigation group. Lane - who will start at the firm on 2 September - will join Mishcon's property litigation group as a contentious construction specialist. His move will bring the group, which sits within the firm's real estate practice, to a total of four partners and 12 fee-earners. Mishcon's wider real estate department has 19 partners and a total of 78 fee-earners.

Norton Rose Fulbright has lost high-profile dealmakers Jake Robson and Adam Summerly to Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) in Singapore. Robson and Summerly, who have been based in the city-state for eight and 14 years have been brought in to support increasing demand from MoFo's clients for work based in and out of South and Southeast Asia. The English-qualified Robson focuses on M&A, private equity, cross-border investment and joint venture work throughout Asia, as well as capital markets transactions in public securities offerings in the region.
