Eversheds ramps up Middle East presence with merger deal

Eversheds has merged with Middle Eastern law consortium KSLG, handing the firm new bases in Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. The consortium, which comprises Dhabaan & Partners, Khasawneh & Associates and Sanad Law Group, has offices in Amman, Baghdad, Riyadh and Dubai. The merger, which went live today (25 May), follows a six-year working relationship between Eversheds and KSLG.

Hogan Lovells has taken a lead role on a high-profile deal in the fashion industry which has seen exclusive shoe brand Jimmy Choo sold to a family-run holding company. The value of the deal - which saw Labelux fight off competition from private equity group TPG Capital to secure the acquisition - has not been announced, but has been reported at more than £500m.

Osborne Clarke has taken a role alongside a number of US firms on Motorola's $975m (£600m) sale of assets to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN). The deal, which was announced in July 2010 and completed on 30 April 2011, sees NSN take responsibility for supporting 50 of the mobile phone giant's network operators across 52 countries, as well as approximately 6,900 employees.

Simmons & Simmons and Taylor Wessing have taken headline roles on the £53m sale of the Waterstone's book chain by struggling music retailer HMV. Simmons took the lead role for the seller, fielding a team led by City M&A partner Giles Dennison, while Taylor Wessing acted for buyer A&NN Capital Fund Management, led by London corporate finance partner Tim Stocks. The deal marks a first-time appointment for Taylor Wessing and comes on the back of a market recommendation, while Simmons is a longstanding adviser to HMV.

The review will cover the external law firms advising mobile operator Vodafone UK as well as those advising Vodafone Group globally. It will not cover local mobile operators outside the UK.

Eversheds' nascent management consultancy arm has picked up work from around 14 of the law firm's key clients, including electronics company Tyco and chemicals firm DuPont, with the firm now looking to broaden its services beyond legal consulting. Eversheds Consulting, which launched in September last year, has advised both companies' in-house legal teams on various areas, including the organisation of their records.
