Allen & Overy (A&O) is among five firms advising on the $7.8bn (£4.7bn) bid by Barrick Gold, the world's largest gold miner, for Equinox Minerals, reports The Am Law Daily. A&O and Canada's Osler Hoskin & Harcourt are advising Equinox on the transaction, which was approved on Monday (25 April) by the Australian and Canadian mining company's board. Perth partners Geoff Simpson and Meredith Campion are heading up the magic circle firm's team.

McDermott hires Herbert Smith Paris corporate chief for new France base

McDermott Will & Emery is launching a new five-partner Paris office with the hire of Herbert Smith's Paris corporate head Jacques Buhart, reports The Am Law Daily. The office, which will formally open on 2 May, will be McDermott's seventh in Europe. Buhart expects the majority, "if not all," of his former clients to follow him to McDermott. Those clients include European travel group TUI, oil and gas giant TOTAL and Toyota Motor Corporation.

New regulation wreaks havoc on private equity houses' returns

The burden of regulatory compliance is causing "misery" for private equity houses, with associated legal and compliance costs eating into returns, according to Better Capital managing director Jon Moulton. Speaking at Legal Week's Private Equity Forum last week (13 April), Moulton said regulation such as the European Commission's Directive for Alternative Investment Fund Managers (AIFM), the forthcoming UK Bribery Act, the US' Dodd-Frank Act and carbon reporting requirements were causing undue problems for buyout houses.

Herbert Smith has made a new appointment to its governing body, electing London corporate partner Alex Bafi to the firm's partnership council.
