Ex-BarCap duo take up new legal roles at London private equity firms

Two former Barclays Capital lawyers have resurfaced at London private equity firms, following a number of departures from the investment bank's legal department. Tom Bartos, formerly a senior legal director at the bank, has taken a role as partner and general counsel at City real estate finance boutique Bell Capital Partners. He will be reunited with former BarCap colleagues Robert Bell and Robert Palache, who launched Bell Capital in 2009.

Kaye Scholer expands London arm with Hogan Lovells and DLA Piper hires

Kaye Scholer has ramped up its London platform with the hire of Hogan Lovells securities head Katherine Mulhern and DLA Piper corporate partner Sean Scanlon, who will both join the firm as partners before the end of the month. Mulhern, a New York-qualified securities lawyer specialising in international equity and debt capital markets, joined Hogan Lovells in 2005 from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, following a secondment to the equity capital markets group of Merrill Lynch.

Slaughter and May and Herbert Smith have taken roles on the merger of Northern Foods and Greencore Group, two food companies seeking to cut costs by combining operations, reports The Am Law Daily. The new company, called Essenta Foods, will be one of the largest frozen and prepared foods providers in the UK with combined sales of £1.7bn.

Barlows confirms three more partner departures and associate job cuts

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has confirmed that three partners from its corporate and commercial group have been asked to leave the firm alongside a handful of associates who have taken voluntary redundancy. As first reported by RollonFriday today (19 November), Barlows has made changes to its corporate group in order to align the firm more closely with its core sectors, including insurance and energy. Five or six associates are expected to leave the firm, with one further partner from the corporate group understood to have been offered a consultancy role.

Freshfields wins lead role on $3bn Indonesia mining deal

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has been instructed by UK financier Nathaniel Rothschild's mining investment firm Vallar on its acquisition of stakes in two of Indonesia's top coal mining businesses, reports The Am Law Daily. Vallar is set to pay $3bn (£1.9bn) for a 25% stake in Bumi Resources and a 75% stake in Berau Coal Energy, Indonesia's first and fifth-largest coal producers respectively.

Carey Olsen recruits ex-CC lawyer for Guernsey base

Carey Olsen has grown its Guernsey arm with the hire of corporate partner Christopher Anderson from Bedell Cristin. Anderson joined the firm's corporate and finance team this week after three years at Bedell, becoming the sixth partner in the group. Prior to Bedell, Anderson worked at legacy Ozannes, Clayton Utz and Clifford Chance. He specialises in investment funds and insurance and reinsurance and has also worked with clients in the private equity sector.

CMS Hasche Sigle has appointed Dr Hubertus Kolster as its new managing partner, following the firm's annual partner conference last week (13 November). Kolster is set to succeed current incumbent Cornelius Brandi, who has managed the firm for a total of 12 years. Kolster, a corporate partner in the firm's Frankfurt office, specialises in corporate and business law, as well as M&A. He has been the firm's Frankfurt managing partner since 2009.

Mayer Brown heads up raft of US firms on multibillion-dollar Caterpillar deal

A line-up of US firms have taken roles on Caterpillar's $7.6bn (£4.7bn) acquisition of mining equipment manufacturer Bucyrus International, reports The Am Law Daily. Mayer Brown advised Caterpillar on the the all-cash transaction - which when including debt, is valued at $8.6bn (£5.4bn) - with a team led by Chicago M&A partners John Sagan and William Kucera. Last month Mayer Brown advised Caterpillar on its €580m (£517m) acquisition of German engine maker MWM Holding, a deal with also handed roles to Clifford Chance and SJ Berwin.
