Private equity house Actis has finalised its first-ever Africa panel, with magic circle firm Clifford Chance (CC) and City firm Hogan Lovells both securing an appointment. The firms were appointed in October following a competitive tender process led by Actis' London-based general counsel, Paul Owers.

Freshfields and A&O handle HSBC's £2.1bn private equity rail sale

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Allen & Overy (A&O) are advising on a £2.1bn deal that will see HSBC sell its train-leasing business Eversholt Rail Group to a private equity consortium, reports The Am Law Daily. The consortium - which comprises 3i Group, Star Capital Partners and Morgan Stanley's infrastructure group - is being advised by an A&O team led by banking partner Jonathan Bevan and corporate partner Susan Howard. A&O also advised on the 2008 financing and acquisition of Angel Trains by a consortium of investors from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Squire Sanders Hammonds merger confirmed by partnership vote

Hammonds and Squire Sanders & Dempsey will go ahead with their transatlantic merger on 1 January 2011, after securing the support of more than 95% of their combined partnership. All bar 17 of the firms' partners took part in the vote, with all voting in favour of the tie-up in a process that closed yesterday (7 November). The vote paves the way for the January launch of a top 50 global firm with combined revenues of around $625m (£386m).

US firms seal merger deal to create $400m 650-lawyer practice

US firm Kilpatrick Stockton has agreed to merge with San Francisco's Townsend and Townsend and Crew, creating a $400m (£250m) practice, reports The Am Law Daily. The combined 650-lawyer firm, which will be named Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, will officially launch on 1 January next year, and will have 17 offices throughout the US. The two firms pursued a possible union earlier this year, but called off the talks in July, citing client conflicts.

Slaughters and White & Case lead on $5.9bn Spanish-Turkish bank deal

Slaughter and May and White & Case have won lead roles on a $5.9bn (£3.6bn) deal involving Spanish and Turkish banks, reports The Am Law Daily. Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentina (BBVA), Spain's second-largest bank, is acquiring a 24.9% stake in Turkiye Garanti Bankasi, Turkey's leading bank. BBVA will purchase 18.6% of the stake in Garanti from GE Capital for $3.8bn (£2.3bn), while the other 6.3% will come from Turkey's Dogus Holdings for $2.1bn (£1.3bn).

White & Case seals Middle East tie-up with Gide's former Riyadh office

White & Case has ramped up its Middle East presence via a tie-up with the former Riyadh arm of Gide Loyrette Nouel and the hire of two new partners in Abu Dhabi. The new association will operate under the name Dr Waleed N Al-Nuwaiser in association with White & Case, and will be headed by ex-Gide corporate and commercial partner Waleed Al-Nuwaiser. Gide announced last week that it had decided to close its Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh offices with immediate effect.

Hammonds set for US merger vote as combined firm's name emerges

Hammonds partners face seeing the firm's name pushed into second place if the merger with Squire Sanders & Dempsey goes ahead, with the brand being dropped entirely in countries where Hammonds does not have an office. Legal Week has learned that the merged transatlantic firm would be known as Squire Sanders Hammonds in those jurisdictions where Hammonds has a presence, including the UK, Europe and Asia. However, in the US and Eastern Europe, where Hammonds has no offering, the combined firm would be branded as Squire Sanders & Dempsey.

Bakers names new managing partner for China and Hong Kong in top-level shake-up

Baker & McKenzie has appointed corporate partner and former executive committee member Poh Lee Tan as managing partner for China and Hong Kong following an overhaul of the firm's executive committee. Tan replaces corporate partner David Fleming as managing partner of Hong Kong, China and Vietnam. Fleming will remain in Hong Kong, but will now focus on client work.
