DLA Piper corporate partner quits Shanghai base to join US firm

Winston & Strawn has added to its Shanghai base with the hire of DLA Piper partner Bertrand Theaud. Theaud joins from DLA Piper's local office and will focus on corporate law, in particular M&A and private equity. Theaud has experience of domestic and cross-border deals for French and other foreign clients in da number of industries, with a particular focus on the retail and chemical sectors.

Nixon Peabody loses five-partner team to Pillsbury in wake of DLA defections

Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman has hired a five-partner team from Nixon Peabody's New York office, reports The New York Law Journal. The exact size of the team is still being finalised and could reach 20 lawyers, said Pillsbury chairman James Rishwain. The departing partners include Mats Carlston, Nixon Peabody's former head of global finance.

Simmons confirms Mayer Brown merger talks to partnership

Simmons & Simmons has informed its partners that it is discussing a merger with Mayer Brown. Senior partner David Dickinson confirmed the talks in an email to the partnership last night (17 June), which stated that the two firms are in "preliminary discussions" about a merger. The note also said that the partners will be informed further about the talks next week. It has been added as a point to the agenda of a scheduled partner meeting due to take place next Friday (25 June), at which other topics will include the voting on this year's new partner promotions.

Ex-Mayer Brown partner settles with SEC one year after Refco conviction

Former Mayer Brown partner Joseph Collins, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in the $2.4bn (£1.6bn) Refco fraud, has settled charges filed against him by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), reports The Am Law Daily. Corporate partner Collins was sentenced in January for his role in the fraud that brought down commodities trader Refco - Collins' largest client when measured by billable hours. The final judgment against Collins enjoins him from violating a section of the securities code on the use of manipulative and deceptive practices in the purchase and sale of securities. Collins consented to the judgment without admitting or denying the SEC's charges.

Linklaters and Dickson Minto are among a raft of firms to have won roles on the £1.6bn merger of F&C Commercial Property Trust (FCPT) and the UK Commercial Property Trust (UKCPT). The deal, which was agreed last week (9 June) and is due to close by August, will create the sixth-largest UK-listed property company, with a market capitalisation of approximately £1.6bn.
