Latham makes rare City lateral with Ashurst private equity hire

Latham & Watkins has made its first lateral partner hire in London since October 2008, with the US firm bringing in private equity partner Graeme Ward from Ashurst. Ward is set to join Latham's City corporate practice over the coming weeks. He will become the seventh private equity partner in London, working as part of a team led by partner Nigel Campion-Smith.

Ashurst is to strengthen its Singapore corporate practice with the hire of a former partner from Allen & Overy's (A&O) London office. City-based corporate partner Keith McGuire joined Ashurst's Singapore office on 11 January. As the first decade of the 21st century draws to a close, the time has come to take stock: a lot has changed in the Swiss corporate governance landscape over the past 10 years. First, the takeover regulation which came into force in 1998 has provided the basis for a number of takeovers of listed companies, many of them unsolicited. Second, the rise in shareholder activism outside of takeover situations has had a profound impact on the governance of Swiss-listed companies. Third, the recent corporate crises in Switzerland have had their effects on the perception of the role of a Swiss corporate board, especially with regards to board composition and the agenda a Swiss board should pursue.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher have taken lead roles on Heineken's acquisition of Mexican drinks company FEMSA for €5.3bn (£4.8bn). FEMSA, the largest beverage company in Latin America, will receive a 20% stake in Heineken as part of the all-share deal, which sees Heineken take over FEMSA's beer business, which includes brands such as Sol.
