Dewey Adds Two Partners From Reed Smith

Dewey Ballantine has added two corporate partners in New York. John J. Altorelli and Jeffrey A. Potash, who both come from the New York office of Pittsburgh's Reed Smith, are the first lateral partners to join Dewey since the January collapse of a plan to merge with San Francisco's Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. Dewey had seen a number of partners leave ahead of the planned merger, and departures themselves contributed to the ultimate scuttling of the deal.

The firm, which is facing allegations it demoted 31 partners in 1999 on the basis of age, had argued for the suit's dismissal on the grounds the EEOC had no authority to seek monetary damages. But that motion was denied by both the Chicago district court hearing the case and the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
