Ending on a high note

The crowds at East Lake Golf Club were smaller this year compared to last year, due to the terrible economy and the absence of defending champion Tiger Woods, who is still recovering from knee surgery. But the fans that did show up were rewarded with an exciting Tour Championship. It came down to the final four golfers Sunday, with Anthony "A.

Why Tiger did not win The Players

I was pumped to watch the final round Sunday of The Players Championship on TV as Tiger Woods was positioned nicely for another one of his patented charges. Woods was playing in the final pairing with third-round leader Alex Cejka of Germany, who has never won in the U.S. I just knew the pressure of playing in the last group with Woods would be too much for Cejka, who held a five-shot lead over the world's No.

'A good test of golf'

A mid-afternoon rainstorm slowed me down Friday as I drove toward my golf destination in Henry County. I had a 4:05 p.m. tee time at Crystal Lake Golf Country Club. The rain was not going to deter me, though. I was convinced it would blow over and soon I'd be on the course. My golf playing-time has been limited over the past four months as I coached my son's Little League baseball team.

Golfers beware of heat illness

Last month, while a heat wave strangled most of the Southeast, I played in a two-day golf tournament at my home club in Columbus. On the first day, my tee time was around 12 p.m., so I golfed during the hottest part of the afternoon. With the temperature sizzling at 100 degrees, I found myself struggling against the heat like never before.

Tiger's injury prompts a look back

As an avid golf fan and curious student of the game, I have followed the career of Tiger Woods since he was a junior golfer. Woods first registered in my golf conscious in 1994 when, at age 18, he won the U.S. Amateur at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The image of a young, scrawny Woods sinking a birdie putt from the fringe of the diabolical 17th island green will forever be ingrained in my memory bank.
