German Firm Heuking Kuhn Opens in Zurich

Heuking Kuhn Luer Wojtek, the German former ally of U.K. firm Denton Wilde Sapte, has opened an office in Zurich, becoming the first major German independent to open in the Swiss financial center. The new office will be headed up by new private client partner Holger Erwin, who joins Heuking Kuhn from rival independent Haarmann. Erwin, who is both U.K. and German-qualified, has previously practiced at elite German independent Hengeler Mueller and London giant Allen & Overy.

London Firms Eye Malaysian Market as It Edges Towards Liberalization

In a move to promote Malaysia as a hub for Islamic finance work, the Malaysian Bar Council is proposing to liberalize its rules and allow foreign law firms into the country through joint ventures. Eversheds is currently the only U.K. law firm with a presence in the country, but City firms including Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, DLA Piper, Lovells, Herbert Smith and Norton Rose are keeping a close eye on the process and have not ruled out entering the country through a joint venture in the longer term.

The office will open on Aug. 3, and will be led on the ground by Dubai-based banking and finance partner Richard Ernest, and overseen from Dubai by Gulf managing partner Graham Lovett. The firm expects the Abu Dhabi office to grow to 20 to 30 lawyers in two to three years.

CMS Russia Cuts 30 Jobs in Second Round of Layoffs

CMS Russia has laid off 30 staff members in Moscow, including 10 fee earners, in a redundancy round that ended Nov. 27. The Moscow office has cut a total of 29 fee-earner positions and 32 support-staff roles in 2009, following a previous round of job cuts that closed in June. CMS launched its Russia office in January through the merger of the local offices of CMS Cameron McKenna and its French and German alliance firms. The firm attributed the cuts to the significant reduction of work in the Moscow market.
